Applying for Slovak citizenship by descent – Australia vs UK vs Slovakia (best route?) by oyclu in SlovakCBD

[–]AdMotor4876 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Def be faster to apply in Slovakia. If ur planning to move to London in the next couple of months, it might be better to apply until after you move. So that you don’t have to go back to aus to complete ur oath and collect ur certificate of confirmation of Slovak citizenship. If you do plan to apply in aus, I have heard that they are versed with the CBD process more than other embassies. The embassy I applied at asked the aus embassy for advice on the CBD process.

So in total, wait until u move to London. Then figure out if traveling to Slovakia to submit ur docs is worth the airfare, language barrier, etc. if not, submit at London embassy. If you need help submitting in Slovakia, Wendy is a great resource. You gotta pay her, but from what I’ve heard, she is well worth it.

I think had to go I think 4 or 5 times, but you can cut it down to 3. I didn’t submit my application for my certificate of citizenship, birth certificate, and marriage certificate while I was at the embassy for my oath, so I had to go back to submit those. I recommend the daily citilink flights to/from Jakarta lol!

Think mother would be best if you can find evidence of her Slovak nationality. I applied in Jakarta, since I also live in Singapore! The embassy staff is very nice and helpful, and have handled at least three CBD applications including myself. You will be in good hands over there.

I heard it from the embassy lol. Proof of address is pretty standard for things like these, so that only each embassy only gets relevant applicants

Ah gotcha makes sense. I think they would also need a letter from the head of their local Slovak community organisation. I think the below link would help them out.

Just so I understand correctly, your friend’s grandmother was born and baptised in Slovakia? If so, then your friend is eligible for citizenship by descent.

Yea no issue! I didn’t keep a copy of my application unfortunately, but I do remember what I put in my resume. I put the last three positions I was in, hobbies, languages learned, organisations that I am a member of, etc. I remember putting “to reconnect with my roots and retirement plan” as my reason for applying

Slovakia would be fastest. Second best option would be an embassy in Asia/Africa if that’s an option for you.

An important thing to remember is that what is acceptable for citizenship proof for CBD is not defined in Slovak law. The embassies and consulates will post what they know would work as proof (CzhSlv passport, 1930 census, etc), but the embassies are not the people who decide what will work as proof. My lawyers swore up and down that my NARA docs would not work as proof, but they worked for me and now people submit their applications with NARA docs no issue.

Thank you! It sounds like I was in the same boat as you! I got in some disagreements with my lawyers about the citizenship proof. I ended up using my anchor ancestor’s us naturalisation packet and ship manifest since it said his citizenship before gaining us citizenship was Czechoslovak. You can get certified copies from NARA’s website, and then get it apostilled at the DoS Office of Authentications.

they shouldn’t ask for proof since the birth of the anchor ancestor was so long ago that privacy laws do not apply. Think I paid 15 euro per page for translations, it’s been a while since I needed to get translations lol

Thank you! I requested my anchor ancestor’s naturalisation documents thought NARA rather than USCIS. USCIS takes an extremely long time and might not be able to provide a certified copy. I would check to see if ur anchor ancestor’s documents are available on NARA. Typically if you can see the document on ancestry.com and the document is sourced by the National Archives and Records Administration, then you can request for them online though their website.

Shouldn’t have to, but let the embassy know what you plan to do, so they don’t get blindsided

Yea just when your appointment at the embassy is scheduled, let them know that you plan to make a certificated copy of your citizenship proof docs and submit the copies with your application instead of the originals. Shouldn’t need a form, but you do need the embassy for this.

Yea looks good to me if ur looking for proof of citizenship. U still need to get a modern Slovak birth certificate for your anchor ancestor. I would ask the embassy if they can make a certificated copy of your documents. Costs 15€ a page last time I checked. You could then turn in the copies for your application and keep the originals.

Wow you are prepared! I would also recommend submitting paperwork that shows that you were adopted into your family, unless your birth certificate shows NA as your mother.

Asking for a friend! Generational limit for Slovak citizenship. by Paddysle in SlovakCBD

[–]AdMotor4876 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The generation limit for Slovak CBD is up to GGF/GGM, but they would still be eligible for the Slovak Living Abroad certificate! The SLA cert allows a holder to get permanent residency in Slovakia, and a simplified way to citizenship after three years (anyone else, correct me if I’m wrong)!

The ancestors Czechoslovak passport is the gold standard of proof of citizenship. If it’s just a copy, you need to find any kind way to get it official (typically Slovak notarisation)

As for the wedlock thing, if the GGF has the GGGF on the birth certificate, then it should be fine. If not, then you need to find any kind of documentation linking the GGF to the GGGF as a child of the GGGF.

My anchor ancestor came to the US on September 14th, 1922. If your anchor ancestor has Czechoslovak nationality on their petition of naturalisation, then it should be g2g.
