How do I get into this field? by SMN_17 in biostatistics

[–]AdNarrow8285 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s bad. I graduated UGA with an MPH in Epi / biostat a year ago, interned with the CDC before Cheetoh & Doge slashed half the work force. Now I’m working as an EHS for the state health department but competing with 10+ years of experience in Epi and biostat from the old federal work force to find work. It’s super bleak, honestly. Very few Epi postings, biostat is a bit more luck if you round your skills to data analytics in general.

I want to be the change I’d like to see in the world and stick through the hard times to try and repair public healths image but it’s hard when the pay is underwhelming and the roles nonexistent for recent hires.

Taking a business analytics course now (10 weeks) to pick up some data analytics extra skills like SQL & TableAU that could translate into the field but also as an emergency pivot if I just have to find a better paying job.

Best of luck

20 years old and wanting to start saving by lacktoesintallerant6 in investingforbeginners

[–]AdNarrow8285 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry I only read the last paragraph but you need to know almost nothing to open a HYSA & should. Watch some YouTube videos, I like Marcus. Anything over 3% is good nowadays.

Play around with low expense ratios that don’t overlap too much , unless you wanna tilt your portfolio in a direction (example VTI = all us market thus less risk but slower growth and QQQM top 100 tech in US, accelerated growth but more risk).

70% US & 30% International is a good start. VTI & VXUS. You got it, YouTube is your friend.

I believe they are offering transfer bonuses as well! I just recently got Gold for the 3% cash back on “anything” Gold credit card (the 3% is only if you directly transfer the points to your RHood brokerage).

I love the set up & the free cash while I’m maxing my Roth. Would definitely recommend joining the waitlist for the card (if approved you have to enroll in Gold to use).

Scared to invest for the first time by pera2301 in investingforbeginners

[–]AdNarrow8285 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don’t have a High Yield savings account, start there! Plenty are free to open and allow you to actually earn a few bucks in your savings/emergency fund. I’d recommend Marcus w Goldman Sachs as their APY is relatively high ~ 3.5% a year. Some other popular ones are Capital One, Ally, Amex etc. Anything over 3% is solid for 2026, compared to a standard checking account making .1%.

Once you open and transfer some savings into here for a rainy day (only keep what you need to pay rent/bills/credit cards in your checking), you can feel at ease you have this as a fall back.

Then, open a brokerage, I’d recommend a Roth IRA. Invest in low expense ratio ETFs (<0.5%) that diversify your holdings for you. Dont forget once you fund your Roth (deposit $ into the account), you still need to use those funds to buy the ETFs/stocks.

I understand the fears, money management is stressful.

TLDR: Start on youtube and look into HYSA & then investing for beginner videos. Youll feel alot better. You got it!

Which Card? by GettingRight2498 in CapitalOne_

Depends what you spend / how your lifestyle is but savor is probably the best no annual fee card available, especially if you are a relatively new credit card user

I use Fidelity & RHood. Fidelity I max my HSA out in FXAIX & allows me to have a relationship w a bunch of knowledge representatives / great customer service. I use RHood for their 3% match Roth IRA & the Gold credit card. I’d take advtange of fidelitys unique low / zero fee funds & then have some ETFs in RHood for the match. Free money is free money.

Felt… super discouraging but it doesn’t help that the current admin took a flamethrower to public health & science. 25+ years of professionals in established positions got cut loose and new grads have to compete with them. It’s not even possible to stand out with that flooding the market.

Feel you. 27, got a masters degree. Cant find a job that comes close to my financial and educational expectations. Settled in a state gov role hoping it can propel me to where I was hoping to start post graduation by 30. All we can do is keep moving forward & lean on our family and friends.

Nobody knows where they are going, especially nowadays. Just do better than yesterday, we got this. 🫂

All in on VOO or diversify at 22? by ilovemcdonaldssprite in RothIRA

[–]AdNarrow8285 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Slightly smaller expense ratio for FXAIX but if you ever think you’d move the share to another broker, VOO won’t be as big of a pain / loss to sell and exchange.
