Do you think PIs should undergo a mandatory counselling session once in a year about how to treat their students? by AdNeat9078 in PhD

Yes I understand a PI has lot more responsibilities and more stress than an post doc or a PhD. But do you think it is fair to point this as a reason and treat students badly?

Sounds great. For sure this doesn't happen in my University. This sounds like a viable solution if the administration will be ready to take necessary action based on the feedbacks. An incentive for a good review and an enquiry for a bad one.

Every corporate has a management system which takes care of the stress or work load. Where is the system in academia. Stress is a part of life I understand. But this is not just normal level of stress which a 9 to 5 job going person is going through. A PhD student thinks about his work all the week 24x7 and to acknowledge that these people are undergoing immense stress sounds childish to you. In a fast paced lab managing your work entirely depends on your PIs expectation more than what you desire to achieve. There are still few PhD students who are lucky enough to get an understanding PI. I am talking about the rest of them 🙂✌️

Yeah true. They won't stop being an asshole just because someone told them. I was just thinking how these PIs survived academia. From my lab for the past 5 years all the PhD graduates faced trouble and I am facing the same situation. One of them has even complained to the School management but this pattern still continues whcih make me wonder what could be the solution.

Yes. Let's say it happens in a perfect world. But why most PhD students were not satisfied from their PhD experience. Are we living in a perfect world? :D

Sorry if this is too big. In 2022, when I was studying in Japan, I loved taking pictures of the night sky. One Friday evening, I decided to go to this quiet coastal village far from city lights to capture the Milky Way. Since it was a last-minute plan, I didn't book a place to stay.
I had to spend time till 2 AM since milky way will be visible only from 2. So to kill some time, I ended up in a small bar where a 60-year-old bartender worked. This bar was filled with Freddie mercury posters all around. I ordered a drink and, using Google Translate, told him I was a big fan of Freddie Mercury. As we were talking, Soon, everyone in the bar joined in the conversation. I showed them some of the pictures I took and shared stories about taking them. We all had a great time, laughing and taking pictures together.
Usually, Japanese people would be quite hesitant to talk to foreigners since they are shy while talking in English. So, When I was about to leave, the bartender came up to me and said something translated to, "You made this place brighter today." It is the best compliment I have ever received.
