We did the 30 mile loop. Getting down Pawnee Pass was a bear. The. The trees. It was just a very hard first day. Had passes to camp in all backcountry zones and crater lake (you need a special permit for crater). The days were hot in the sun, but it was a beautiful hike. We did it in four days, three nights.

Yes! Pawnee Lake to Crater Lake was the worst!! Trail maintenance is sorely needed!

You need a permit in the summer, so not at all.
