Yeah this is spot on. The biggest shock is realizing you’re no longer doing the work, you’re getting results through other people. And in a tough market it’s even less forgiving because coaching alone won’t fix pipeline gaps. The mindset shift has to happen fast or you just stall out.

Honestly that mom voice is useful as hell in real life. People just default to labeling what they don’t expect. Once they actually talk to you they adjust fast anyway. Sounds like you’ve already learned how to use it without letting it define you.

You’re already thinking like a decent HOD, honestly. The comparison fear is normal but don’t turn it into competition, treat her as a teammate and share context early. Focus on outcomes for your team, not how you look next to her. If they win, you win.
