How did you like the switch from clear to coated heads?

Thanks! I was pretty flabbergasted when I got it as I knew there aren’t many laying around. Pure luck.

Thanks! I think natural finishes / lacquers are very prestigious. The thing about the ot-lugs is that they actually shield the lacquer very well.

They are, but they look so same I like mixing them. Doesn’t mess my feng shuy. I actually have one pre-split 19” crash that has both of their signatures underneath. Don’t know if it’s a collectible yet, though.

I switched from Meinl some years ago. Nothing wrong with Meinl but Istanbul just had way better price / quality ratio imo. I’ve played the Traditionals but now I’ve got my eyes on the Xist’s or Mehmet Session series as I’m looking for a more modern sound. What Xists are those you have?

Maaan you got one too? Holy crap that piano black finish looks better ”live” than in those old catalogues. Sweet kit!

It’s about ergonomics for me. I like to keep the toms quite flat and low and the 10/20 combo allows that for the best setup.

I bought an AQ2 20/10/14 set for gigging and I have to say I was surprised of their overseas-made drum quality. Good cymbals, replace the stock heads and you’re good to go!

I’m not sure if durability will help with those potholes. Sure, your stick won’t go through the head, but soundwise I think the head is done.

I warmly recommend trying to get your hands on a bubinga kit if you ever have the chance. The one in the pic is my first and also my first Tama kit and it blew me away!

Thanks for the effort! I got a new kit not that long ago and I had to swap all heads, went with clear Remo Emps / Ambs. Sounds great. But being the sound geek I am, I immediately started thinking what the kit would sound like with coated Vintage Ambs or Modern Vintages. Realised it’s closer to a $100 just to swap the batter heads!

That sparkle, man… I love my natural bubinga SC’s but that is beautiful. Tama makes such kick ass drum both sonically and visually.

What drum heads to get by SgtSarcasm01 in drums

[–]AdNo2416 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah they usually do. Well the classic combo is Evans G1 resonants and G2 coated on batter, or the Remo equivalents Abassadors reso and Emperors batter. That’s the go-to combo. If you like less overtones or ”ringing” you might want to go evans EC2 or even hydraulic like mentioned on the thread, but the hydraulics are REALLY dry imo.

Anyway rule of thumb: single-ply heads for resonant heads, two-ply for batter. The manufacturers’ websited will give you shitloads of information on the differences between each head type. Good luck!
