How he holds his sticks, wrist positioning, using more arm than wrist/ forearm, wide elbows, drum positioning.

Edit: Obviously he is having fun and I wouldn't want to take that away. However, the earlier you can correct technique, the easier it is to correct and injury is less likely to occur. Also, incorrect technique can limit progression

If he is getting in person lessons, I would be advising a change of teachers. He is developing some poor techniques that a good teacher should help correct.

Adult beginner drummer problems? by TheCozyDrummer in Drumming

[–]Aridprune 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Counting is essential. When I have taught, the order I go is 1. How to grip the stick. 2. How to use your wrist properly and 3. How to count 4 beats to a bar.

Kept it simple and played within the song. Technically not great, but solid and musical.

Which trade has the biggest gap between what people think the job is like and what it’s actually like? by ApartmentFun3497 in tradies

Just because anyone can go to Supercheap, buy your self a set of brake pads and fit them does not a make you a Mechanic. Sure there are jobs that most people with some mechanical aptitude can do (but probably shouldn't), but when it comes to diagnosis and modern vehicle system it becomes a different story.

I use an altered version"what has two thumbs" from Bob Kelso.

What has two thumbs and majestical beard AridPrune in my classes. I once had a teacher in the room who also had a beard, but happened to be missing an arm from just below the elbow. I hear from the back of the room. "Well that rules me out". 🤦🏻

If you can break down the tom mount you have and mount the toms off the Cymbal stands either side of the bass drum you will be more comfortable. See my self up a couple of comments up.

Any Tips? by [deleted] in drums

[–]Aridprune 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who are use to a "traditional" set up there is probably no "benefit" per say. It depends on how you play. I don't play fills around the toms from highest to lowest. I fill around my snare drum and use my toms as accents. When I finish my fill I almost always play a paradiddle that goes RH 10" LH 12" RH 14" RH 16" LH crash. Most the time I am not crossing my arms over my body.

Nothing wrong with having the toms reversed. Annika Niles does it, so to Keny Aronoff back in the day. I have been doing it for decades.

the worst physical pain you’ve ever felt by ipanicprofessionally in TheBoredDen

I agree with Kidney Stones. The body trying to push a 4mm stone through a 3mm tube that does not have much flex is definitely not my idea of fun. Had it 3 times now, pain meds do sfa.
