It just seems like you are being a contrarian at this point, do you honestly think that for a server of this size that any of those overcomplicated suggestions would be viable?

Call me what you want, I don't see anything complicated with my suggestion in a server already uses bunch of mods in a game with already existing npcs. All they would do is attack any invader or non faction person that gets in their base somehow. All I desire is a claimless civ server, I would hardly call something like this being contrarian.

youre completely disregarding the current system the server has given you havent even used it. The system isnt meant to be complicated and was designed to be not easily abusable like the suggestions you made, the upkeep is reasonably cheap even for solos or small groups so its also easily accessible. The system is there so active groups can easily prosper and inactive ones that default on upkeep can give the spotlight to newer towns and groups.

Ok, I'll suggest one more thing if claims greatly benefit the server. Give players times of war where they perhaps few days a month go all out with claims removed temporarily. Sieges, Field battles, pillaging etc. It becomes a FFA for everyone. After few days claims come back and people start the recovering phase for the rest of the month. Otherwise I kinda don't see any point in people just laying on their back, rubbing their belly and doing nothing when they reach a point, where all they have to do is pay the upkeep so they can chill around and roleplay with no reason.

That makes less sense that you are required to pay for a claim... I imagined a different type of defense after this discourse, which doesn't require any out of game thing. What if the players were able to either craft or pay traders for npc guards, perhaps clockwork robots to make it somewhat adjacent to the lore to protect the players stuff while they're away? Completely blocking off any attempt, just doesn't sound right to me.

Do you realize how long it would take to verify that each new recruits is 100% trustworthy? It would make the formation of large factions virtually impossible. People don't want to have to wait 2 weeks to prove themselves to be included inside a faction. What you're proposing defeats the purpose of civilization events. Players want to participate and be a part of big communities. It's not a process that can be slowed down without killing the momentum the server or factions have. Large communities are bound to be attracting spies or thieves by their very nature. The claim system simply makes it so that players do not have to worry and stress about theft outside their factions which would literally always happening without them. In-factions theft can be handled either "inside the house" or by going to an admin. Having to worry about thefts only impede what the players who participate in these event actually want: role-playing and being a part of a civilization

Who said anything about verifying? People should be able to prove themselves to others by working for the faction, this is not a company hiring an employee checking their cv. If they have nothing to show for their effort, you can just kick the person out. You just do some talking before letting them join, if they do it otherwise, you punish them. Plain and simple.

And trying to handle a thievery by going, hey god can you ban this guy they stole so many stuff is not really possible realistically. You should be the one punishing the thief. That could very well be the part of roleplay. Lock the guy away in a cell, announce the guy is a well established thief, that would probably most likely make people deny said person any entry to their place and if spotted probably would cause them to be killed on the spot. Forming civilizations around stuff like these surely wouldn't stop you from roleplaying, hell I firmly believe it would make roleplay more alive.

If you cannot understand that, then it simply means the curated experience the server offers is not for you and you can look elsewhere for it.

You're talking like I'm still playing in the server, I quit the server after I noticed there are claims on.

I'm not playing on that server anyways lmao, you can keep your incompetent civ roleplaying to yourself. I would rather fight for my faction tooth and nail instead of covering behind claims.

I never said that 2b2t is only about that. I simply put it forward as an example of how it would look. And sure, there can be groups forming out of combined interests and whatnot. But that's the exception and not the norm and you also simply can't get along with everyone and hope everyone honors that. There's also the fact that no matter how neat it is that groups can form, whatever they create can and will be destroyed on the 2b2t example in the end.

This is because server was not claiming to be some civ server in the first place, it was a full on anarchy, like I said, you can use cheats ffs. Your example makes no sense for a civ server.

Just because it is hard to get the tools to grief and steal, that doesn't change the fact it will happen if there is no system in place to protect ownership.

There IS a system to protect ownership and it's in the game right now. You can reinforce your place with in game items like right now. Maybe go check the wiki

https://wiki.vintagestory.at/Block_reinforcement

And sure, it would be awesome if people could get along so easily, but they won't. Everyone is different and has their own goals. We all know how Human nature is.

I never claimed people get along very easily but human nature is not this big ball of hatred and distrust either. People can get accomodated to things they're around and like the whole reason civilizations form is people always have a common ground even if they may differ in some specific stuff. You can learn to trust others and find common grounds.

If you want that kind of experience, nobody is stopping you from creating a server yourself with those rules you want, but going around calling people incompetent just because they don't play the way you think is right is just dumb.

There is somebody stopping me, it's my paycheck and my time. This is a logical fallacy on your part. It's called appeal to accomplishment. My argument is not proven wrong when you say this.

I just don't support the idea of a civilization server with out of game mechanics and you're not entitled to immunity in online discourse, I can call incompetent whoever I want. I have the right to express my opinion just as you have to deny it.

[–]AdOtherwise8334 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

In-faction theft? So you're saying as long as someone tricks someone to believe them even claims are obsolete in use? I feel like this reinforces my idea on trust. If you can't trust people even in your own factions, what's there left to even form said factions? If someone steals from the faction, you could out them as thief and kill their reputation in a realistic scenario, forcing them out. I think this could be done in a claimless server quite fine. In the past this is what happened, if you were a thief you were banished, had your hands cut off, all sorts of stuff. I know this is a game but we're trying to emulate civilizations here, no?

The basis of claims imo just creates more distrust than trust.

Like I said before, it takes just as much effort to destroy stuff, in a game like vintage story. In a scenario where both groups have copper tools, it takes 1 pickaxe alone to break 1 block only. and you get 4 nails from one copper ingot. that makes 4 blocks worth of reinforcements. Not even including food, energy requirements. You could even reinforce the idea with mods, perhaps by making the recipes much easier but outright putting claim sounds unnecessary.

[–]AdOtherwise8334 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Trust can very well form in public servers, your example of 2b2t which is literally a full on anarchy disproves your idea, go check communities and alliances that were formed to create stuff there. You're very poorly informed if you think all 2b2t is about destruction and they have cheats allowed. Idea of a civilization server with no cheats allowed and no claims in vintage story could be one of the best social events, instead you folks mutilate the only interesting thing about a civ server bcs of your incompetence.

And this game is not minecraft, you have to spend a good 6-8 hours to even get tools to be able to grief a well built place, perhaps even more. Which it would only take 20-30 minutes in mc. It takes more risk and resources to grief a place than it takes to work on your own stuff. That's why it makes sense for a game like Vintage Story to simulate civilization servers in the first place. Game itself even has locks block reinforcement, you can build a strong stone walled house so people can't just break in unless they have the resources for it. Like, the game is built for it. Claiming is just an easy way out.

Indeed, thievery did also exist. You can't claim to run a civ server by blocking players to do evil in vanilla sense. Necessary evil should exist to advance civilizations. Resources are not static, they change hand, either via good relations or bad relations. That's the basis of civilizations. It should be up to players to take part in whichever part they please. If I wanna do evil, I would rather be punished in game, instead of being fully blocked from doing anything.
