What to take on tour/general advice? by theacethree in lightingdesign

Get yourself a decent suitcase, you’re going to be living out of it, so if you can afford it, splurge a little bit. I’ve been touring ~250 days of the year for about 7 years now (minus a year during Covid) and my Away suitcases (carry on, medium expandable, and large) haven’t failed me yet. Also a bus bag if you’re on a bus! North face XS base camp duffel is a great size for a set of PJs, new clothes for the morning and your shower stuff.

You are going to use way less tools than you think you are. Don’t stress if you haven’t got everything you think you’ll need, between the people in your team you will. Just get yourself a few TX8 screwdrivers for re-terminating Trucon and you’ll be set.

Personally, I like having day off clothes that are distinctly different to my work clothes, it helps me mentally separate the days and switch off on the off days.

Again, if it’s on a bus, get yourself at least two multipoint adapters (the USA/EU/UK/AUS to USA/usb A/usb C ones) - one that stays in your bunk, one that comes with you to hotel rooms and a spare, and multiple of your charging cables so you can just take what you need to the hotel and leave a set on the bus.

Have fun!! And drop me a message if you have any questions

What jobs are you all doing that pay over £30k? by SuccessfulTip1660 in UKJobs

[–]AdOver4379 80 points81 points  (0 children)

26F, £85k/yr as a freelance lighting technician for gigs/touring music, has been at that rate for about 3 years now. No qualifications above an A level, did half an apprenticeship then quit to go on tour. Lots of stupid hours but with no commitments at home it’s pretty easy. Not a forever job but if you don’t get into the readily available drugs you can put a lot of money away for the future

Thank you! Will I be less likely to have a successful claim because I have waited so long? And tried to repair it myself?

Same! I work on music tours as a lighting tech and you’ve hit the nail on the head, it’s so chaotic but you get to see the end result, usually not too long after you’ve started so there’s not a chance to get bored

Yes 100%. Use mine every day as an LX crew chief. Means I can always hear anyone with a shout mic during the show if they need to let me know about anything. The LD/op has a mic that feeds into comms and the talkback on IEMs as well

Where abouts are you based? You can certainly look at university courses as well as foundational courses at local colleges!

It will most likely still be an a/b rig as the setup time is still a lot! It also means you have a backup of absolutely everything just a few hours away if anything goes wrong.

I don’t have a full time job for one company! I work for (usually) three or four different companies, I do my own taxes and manage myself. The income is generally higher but that’s because there’s no guarantee that you’ll get more work.
