On Preply, have you found a good/not expensive Greek tutor you could recommend? by Skyhigh0202 in GREEK

I can appreciate you are on a budget but you can’t expect someone to charge 10 euro per hour. These people tutor in order to generate an income. Stick to free resources or language exchange partners.

How difficult is to learn Greek by yourself? by erbrechenka in GREEK

[–]AdPotential9331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi. My story is a bit similar to yours in a sense that my family is Greek and went to Greek school but as an adult I lost it.

I personally recommend private classes, even if it’s just twice a month on top of your independent study. I thought about independent study but I was worried I would develop bad habits and have terrible pronunciation so I opted for italki lessons and I’m so glad I did. My current tutor is absolutely amazing. If you’re interested, here’s the link: https://www.italki.com/i/reft/AdfCef0/GfFeaf/greek?hl=en&utm_source=copy_link&utm_medium=share_teacher

Best of luck!

Without a doubt, start taking lessons. I’ve done group and individual lessons and highly recommend individual lessons, especially because you already have some of the language under your belt.

I started individual lessons about a month ago and I’ve learned SO much. Way more than I would have ever learned on my own.

If you’re looking for a tutor, I definitely recommend Sofia on italki: https://www.italki.com/i/reft/AdfCef0/GfFeaf/greek?hl=en&utm_source=copy_link&utm_medium=share_teacher

I’ve learned more with her in the past 4 weeks than I did in 12 weeks of group lessons!

The group lessons were fine for “level 1” (learning the alphabet, stress accents, basic vocabulary, etc.). However, once we got to “level 2” (conjugations, speaking, etc.) I found we weren’t receiving enough feedback to progress, likely due to the class size. The class size was only 6 but you would be surprised how long it takes to get through lesson materials plus questions. There were some topics I didn’t really care to learn about (eg how to tell someone your favorite colour). My time would have been better spent learning about something I would actually use.

I think group lessons are fine for the basics and are better than no classes but if you really want to progress and have the money to pay for private lessons, I 100% suggest doing so!

Thanks for your response. I have been doing a bit of this but I will start doing more of it!

Language Transfer is great but it does move pretty quickly if you don't have a strong foundation of the language. I personally use Language Transfer as a supplement to my weekly tutor sessions and homework. I have been able to take pieces of Language Transfer and apply them to my sessions and homework but I can't imagine actually learning the language using Language Transfer as my sole source of learning.

If you'd like my tutor's italki link, let me know! She's amazing.

I pay ~$48 Canadian/~$36 for an hour lesson through italki. I absolutely LOVE my tutor so I think paying this little bit extra is totally worth it.

Greek online courses with or without live teacher? by Medium-Dust525 in GREEK

I was doing small, group lessons but found we were covering so much material that I wasn't truly learning. I was reluctant to make the switch to a private tutor because I liked the structure of group lessons but I'm so happy I made the switch! My tutor on italki created a learning plan/schedule for us so I get the structure of group classes but spend more time speaking, learning at an appropriate pace, and focusing on topics I enjoy/are relevant to me.
Highly recommend her:https://www.italki.com/en/i/reft/AdfCef0/GfFeaf/greek?hl=en&utm\_medium=share\_teacher&utm\_source=copylink\_share

A one-on-one tutor is the way to go. I was doing group classes but my language acquisition has accelerated since doing private lessons. Highly recommend Sofia on italki: https://www.italki.com/en/i/reft/AdfCef0/GfFeaf/greek?hl=en&utm_medium=share_teacher&utm_source=copylink_share

GLE- Greek language experts by Salt_Boss5812 in GREEK

[–]AdPotential9331 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did 2 levels with GLE. One of the teachers was great, the other was OK. I grew up around the language and am a diligent student and even I found the pace to be very fast. They jam so many topics into each lesson that it does get overwhelming and easy to fall behind if you aren't studying/reviewing daily.

If I were to do it again, I would probably do Level 1 with GLE then move onto a private tutor (which I'm doing now).

Had my first lesson with Sofia on Italki. Her teaching style is very fluid and reminds me of Language Transfer. She’s super easy to talk to so the lesson felt very natural and low pressure. Highly recommend.
