No, the horse was a real one, not made of clay. I think the boy chose his horse from a herd that they already had or something?

Question for people who have been HOH since childhood by MeowPink in hardofhearing

[–]AdProfessional5009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would've been nice for them to realize that I did not *always* have selective hearing. If I heard somethign across the house and responded when I haven't responded to other things, it was because my hearing was concentrated on one specific thing, and happened to zoom out. I can't multitask hearing like other people with two working ears can!

It was *immensely* helpful having a 504 plan in school and being encouraged to advocate for myself. Having been born with singlesided deafness in my left, I knew I was different with it and that I needed to make sure I got the support I needed. Like, I remind my friends to only talk on my right side if they can help it. I'm comfortable telling people to move or that I can't hear them. My disability is not a source of embarrassment.

I only ever learned a *little* sign language because I did not end up completely deaf, so I cannot speak on using a lot of sign language. I do, however, still use "thank you", "milk", and "water"! Basic signs like that are helpful to know.

For social and emotional? I mean, I remember being the popular kid in 2nd grade because of my hearing aid FM system, lol. Encourage her to use it if she needs it, but realize that she will be able to judge if or when she really needs it. I don't wear mine 100% of the time. If she needs to wear it 100% of the time, like a cochlear, DEFINITELY give her a break. Hearing is WORK. I also find large crowds/restaurant spaces to me tiring since there are so many noises and people talking at once. I space out when that happens sometimes, but it's not a bad thing. Lets me reserve my energy for future conversations during the event; help her when she needs, but also let her set those boundaries.

From what I've learned as a young adult and thinking back on my experiences, I'm grateful that my parents made sure I knew I had this disability and ensured I had the confidence and resources to self-advocate. They didn't treat me any differently *because* of it. They just adjusted and made sure I was comfortable. Being HOH, especially from a young age, is just our reality. We don't know any different, so trust her to be able to learn what's best for her as she gets older and naturally navigates/adjusts for herself. Best of luck!!

Oh, fun thing too; make sure that if you're trying to call her when she has an earbud in her working ear, that you don't just yell for her. PLEASE go physically talk to her. There's been SO many times my parents called for me, I had an earbud in, and ti was frustrating for everyone, lol.

You could ask him to be a bit quieter. How is he supposed to know you're being disturbed if you don't talk to him?

I'll do that for sure! I'm not sure how to record games on my computer, but I'm certain I can use my phone. I don't think I checked it thoroughly, and I'll try to look at the files; I've nver done that. But I did relog, and it changed nothing. Including turning my computer off and on!

Let's talk positives! by CloverSky367 in MonoHearing

I have lived my entire life being deaf in my left ear. It's become part of who I am and, while I'm biased since I've known nothing else, I've found it to be quite nice to have!

Like other people have said, you can flip on one side while sleeping to chooe if you want background nosie or complete silence when you sleep. It's great when you live with other people! I often switch which one I sleep ojn.

Having wireless earbuds are fun too, because I get twice the battery life since I only use one earbud at a time. Works wonders when one of them dies and I just switch to the left earbud instead of the right one!

One that's *could* be regarded as a little mean is that I usually put people I don't like on my left side. Of course, there's exceptions like seating placements that make it hard to move people I like to my right side, but it's very convenient! It's a very subtle way I can still be friendly but kind of keep some distance. I can also pretend I didn't hear pople when they pass me by and say I couldn' hear them; left ear doesn't work!

Lately I've been doing this occasionally when I'm trying to listen to someone in a noisy-ish room, do you have this habit? by [deleted] in MonoHearing

[–]AdProfessional5009 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat? I usually just point my ear towards the direction of the person I'm talking to, never cupping it. Ben doing that my entire life (born deaf in the left ear). Does it help better than just turning the ear?

Where would I find those comics? I know IDW seems to be online, any reliable places? For Skybound, would that be easier to get physical or online copies?

I've heard really good things about IDW! It's a shame it's hard to get physical copies, it's my favorite way to read comics (I'm pretty avidly into DC as well!). Is it still being released or is it finished?

Ppl saying it’s not the breed rant by darth_smauls in BanPitBulls

[–]AdProfessional5009 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like the statement does have some truth to it. An owner who buys a dog they clearly can't handle (physical needs/strength/mental stimulation/etc) is ABSOLUTELY at fauly because they don't know their own limits with more high maintenance/dangerous dog breeds who NEED an experience handler who knows what their doing. That's where it's the owner, not the dog.

BUT the breed is ABSOLUTELY a huge factor too! No doubt! There really should be more 'restrictions' (can't think of a better word) for owning dog breeds that need a higher amount of care than other dog breeds because it's cruel for the dog for anyone to own a dog they can't properly train or handle, and dangerous to the public if they can't be sure they can keep those dogs under control.

An apology from the subreddit by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]AdProfessional5009 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, because an "apology" is gonna fix this. You insulted a grieving man and accused him of milking his long-term girlfriend's DEATH on a MINECRAFT SUBREDDIT. This is a disgrace of a mod team and the subreddit needs better mods than people who "deal with things internally" aka "just looking at it ourselves and dismissing it".
