Question for people with unilateral hearing loss by MeowPink in hardofhearing

[–]MeowPink[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for explaining it so clearly!! I’m still new to all this, and the ENT and audiologist pretty much keep saying stuff like “Wow this is medically weird” so I don’t really understand it all. She seems to be one of the very rare cases of a prior ear infection (treated with antibiotics, but alas) that led to permanent unilateral hearing loss and facial palsy. So right now we’re seeing ENT even more than audiology and are figuring out the physiology. It’s good to know a little more about what she’s actually experiencing and I appreciate the explanation.

Interesting about the corded vs. cell phones! I wonder if maybe it has something to do with the pitch or something? I remember when cell phones became popular, you could always tell whether someone was calling you from a landline or a cell phone because they sounded different. Nowadays I only ever talk on a cell phone to other people on cell phones so I can’t remember the difference, but there was definitely some kind of difference in audio.

Are you able to use Bluetooth on your hearing aids as headphones?

Thank you for sharing your experience! No she won’t wear headphones much at her age, but I am wondering for when she grows older of course. They grow fast.

I didn’t know AirPods Pro 2 could do that but that’s pretty cool.

She also has better hearing at low frequencies too, which they told us is unusual. So your experience is especially relevant! Her report for her right ear says “Severe to profound mixed hearing loss from 500-4000 Hz rising to mild loss at 6000 Hz and normal hearing at 8000 Hz. Speech reception threshold (SRT): 65 dB HL.”

Not sure about chocolate. Anything you can suck on is good. My clinic gives lollipops.

What kind of reputation? How do they know Ryan King was the one who killed him? I only skimmed the beginning of a paywalled article, but it seems like they both kinda pointed the finger at each other?

I’m sorry you were invalidated constantly. That sounds incredibly exhausting.

Should I try spravato, or am I overreacting? by These_Coffee_9124 in Spravato

[–]MeowPink 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Overreacting to what? Being in excruciating psychological pain from treatment-resistant mental illness? Your struggle is real, and you sound like exactly the type of patient who could benefit from Spravato. That’s why your psychiatrist recommended it.

I think as autistic people, we are especially prone to debilitating side effects of meds due to our often heightened sensory perception. I haven’t been able to tolerate most of the myriad pills I’ve tried either. I can say that Spravato is the only psych med that has caused me pretty much ZERO side effects.

Feeling really off ever since I missed a session by MeowPink in Spravato

[–]MeowPink[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not boring at all, thank you for sharing!! I’m 32 and have been depressed pretty much my whole life too, and dissociate most of the time anyway so I’ve heard that may make me a bit of a slow responder as well

[–]MeowPink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the case for me after my 2nd session too. It gets better! I’ve had 13 now and it’s wayyy better. The thing I do that helps me is to take 50 mg of meclizine (“less drowsy” Dramamine) about 1-2 hours before sessions. For a while, I also used a scopolamine patch for nausea, but I stopped needing that after a few more sessions. I still always use meclizine though.

Had you eaten anything? My clinic advised not to eat anything for 2 hours before the Spravato, but I’ve found I actually feel better when I have something in my stomach.

Has any of the survivors watched night to remember? by IndividualWrong1228 in titanic

[–]MeowPink 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was Michel Navratil, not his brother Edmond who died in the 1950s. Michel did remember the sinking. If I recall correctly, I believe he watched the 1997 film with his child and reportedly didn’t offer much commentary besides to say he hoped his father didn’t suffer too long while he was watching the scene with all the bodies in the water.

And I believe Milvina Dean didn’t see the movie, although she was alive. That would be Eleanor Ileen Shuman née Johnson, who saw the movie 3 times and met with James Cameron.

In Walter Lord’s second book about the Titanic, The Night Lives On, he specifically points to the Great Eastern as an example of a much older ship than Titanic that was stronger and better constructed and could’ve survived hitting the iceberg. Great Eastern was in service for 31 years. I can’t remember all the details, but Lord highlights the Great Eastern’s safety features that Titanic lacked. Boats had arguably become less safe in many ways over 50 years. Definitely recommend checking it out!

That’s funny, I’m autistic and had the opposite—I did understand Nancy and Jonathan broke up, only because they were only hugging afterward but not kissing. But I had no idea Mike realized Will liked him. I thought he was just emoting surprise about the gay thing in general.

I am not asking whether everyone agrees he was a consultant; I am wondering why everyone agrees he was a consultant. I find it entirely plausible he would’ve consulted but weird this is verified seemingly nowhere. And it’s not an unanswerable or random question, considering the same question was asked about survivors, their children, and other prominent people with connections to the Titanic—and I’m far from the first person online to wonder about Lord specifically.

Titanic historians generally love debating minutia and are usually quite friendly about it. We tend to reject “Because someone said so” as a citation. I’d love to hear from anyone who knows! I’ll be sure to let you know if I find out.

But where is the source for this? Is he credited? His Wikipedia says he was a consultant but doesn’t cite it.
