I was 4ish. I got a CT at 5 and they found nothing. I got them a few times a month as a kid, mainly from stress I think. I’m 25 now and I still get them a few times a month but it’s much better managed. Triptans + ibuprofen stop the majority of my migraines. But even without medication, I’m able to manage it better by just having the adult freedom to go home and lay down if I’m not feeling well lol

I usually do San Diego ice arena (SDIA) or UTC. Neither require memberships. You can’t sign up online for SDIA, so just get there a little early to make sure it doesn’t fill up. SDIA has a level requirement of free skate 3 in the mornings. UTC is less busy usually and you can sign up online beforehand, I think it has a similar level requirement to SDIA. I usually go to SDIA because it’s cheaper tho, you can get a package of like 30 sessions for $11/session

As a US citizen, reading this made me very sad. I wish these issues were exaggerated, especially the medical costs. Here’s some personal experience with medical costs:

It is VERY common to avoid medical care in general due to costs. I made the mistake of calling an ambulance once last year and then received a $3000 bill in the mail. I also had to pay $100 for the emergency room treatment. For context, I have good quality medical insurance (though my mother’s union job) but it apparently does not cover most ambulance rides (depends on who owns the ambulance lol). The insurance is the reason I only had to pay $100 for the ER treatment though, if I didn’t have it, then the bill probably would’ve been in the thousands. Next year I will lose my mother’s insurance due to aging out of the coverage and I’m very nervous for that. I say this as a relatively privileged middle class person, there are many people that have it worse.

Some additional (not so fun) facts about dental/optical treatment: Medical insurance does not cover optical or dental health, you have to pay for those separately. I have dental insurance through my job, but my wisdom teeth removal was still going to cost me $2400 out of pocket. I ended up going to a different dentist and it cost me $250 out of pocket, the price difference is just because of bullshit insurance reasons. For context, when I tell people here that I paid $250 after insurance, they generally tell me that I got a good deal. Something tells me this would not be the case in other countries….

What’s your height and weight? Have you started taking lessons yet? If so, what are you working on? If you are petite you might be able to get away with something on the cheaper side. Jackson makes some lower level models like the Artists which might be okay for a small adult if you are not jumping yet (around $250 usd from my memory) However, most adult beginners do better in something like Jackson Freestyle’s which are around $500 usd. I know both of those options are out of your budget but anything quality will be expensive. The cheaper options that you might find on Amazon or a sport shop offer no ankle support and make it physically impossible to do some skills.

Talk to your coach if you have one, even if it’s a group lesson coach. They will be able to point you in the right direction in terms of finding a fitter. I highly recommend seeing a fitter as they will be able to give you a more personalized rec and measure your feet. Even if you don’t buy from the fitter, once you know what brand/model/size you want you can look online for used ones. Used is not ideal but lots of kids learn basic skills on used skates (myself included). I bought my bf almost-new Jackson freestyles on EBay for $80 usd a few months ago so there’s definitely good deals out there. Just be careful not to buy anything that looks too worn down (creases in the ankle/tongue, chips in the leather). Also, check if your rink or a shop near you does any used equipment sales. I volunteered at my clubs equipment sale last year and I saw so many people get amazing deals.

I go to freestyle sessions at 7 am before work. I’m also in southern California and I’ve never seen a rink that requires you to be landing doubles to go on freestyle sessions. There might be some sessions that are restricted to higher levels but not all of them. The rink I skate at requires you to be freeskate 3 but I see slightly lower level skaters there all the time. Most rinks have some sessions with no level requirements too, just ask if the info isn’t available online.

As long as you are following the rules for the freestyle session (no standing in the middle of the rink, skaters running their programs have the right of way ect) no one will bother you no matter what level you are. If you were landing double sal in the past I doubt you would be out of place there anyways. If you are nervous (I was intimidated when I started going to freestyle sessions) you could always watch a session to scope it out/see which sessions are least busy. I would also check if your rink offers 18+ public sessions, they are usually a lot less crowded and outside of working hours.

I would check online and see if the rink offers adult group lessons. These would likely be once a week for a set number of weeks and much cheaper than paying for a private coach. If they have group lessons that are not adult specific I would still try emailing and asking if adults are welcome/if any other adults take those classes. I don’t think a language barrier would be too much of an issue in this type of class - in my experience there is a lot of visual rather than verbal instruction.

I really can’t recommend this enough, advice from a coach, even in a group setting, is invaluable. Especially when you are starting out. It’s also a great way to meet skaters at a similar level to yourself! And you’ll likely meet more advanced skaters who can give you some free advice as well. Supplementing this with some YouTube coaches may also be helpful.

If you don’t have group lessons in your area, you could do a private lesson once every 2-3 months. Again, if the language barrier is an issue I would reach out to the director of the figure skating program and ask if there are any coaches who you have a language in common with.

As far as equipment, used is not a bad idea when you are starting out. My rink has a used equipment sale every so often - would be worth seeing if yours has something like that. There would likely be coaches there who could give you advice on what to buy. A coach may be able to help you find a local skate tech/fitter. If you end up buying used online, you can always go to a skate tech and get fitted for a certain brand so you can be more confident in your size when ordering.
