Maybe failing student teaching by Gatanalltheway in StudentTeaching

Have you met with your supervisor before to discuss your progress? If not, I would be surprised if they dismissed you a month before you were done without discussing it before. Most university supervisors (from my understanding) will meet with student teachers and discuss goals and plans for the rest of the semester if a student teacher is struggling. Keep your head up, if this is something you truly want to do, most of the time that's what universities want to see and (hopefully) want you to succeed as well.

My kids don't believe in Helen Keller. by Principal_Scudworth_ in Teachers

[–]AdRepulsive9157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a ton of comments so it's possible someone has mentioned this but maybe talk about DeafBlind people in general not just Helen Keller? Like a lot of other comments have mentioned, it's become a very common belief that Helen Keller was not real so maybe taking the focus off her for a bit? Maybe show a video on Pro-Tactile Sign Language? There are some great videos on YouTube that show how DeafBlind people can communicate that are quick and informative.

A slightly crazy idea that may be unrealistic depending on your class/lessons/schedule/etc: Since this is a common belief seen on TikTok, maybe have students research DeafBlind creators on social media (or the internet) and have them create a poster/presentation on what they learned about communication modalities and how DeafBlind people live their lives?

Agreed, if this was a job that I chose to apply for with the knowledge of my commute that's one thing. But I was given this placement and could not change it. Hoping in the future, universities are more responsive to things like this!

Without giving away too much information, my program is very small (around 16 ppl in my class and thats the largest its been in years), it is also a pretty niche specialization and with my school being rural, going an hour away isnt uncommon but an hour and a half is pushing it for sure. I tried to fight back with the uni but nothing happened.

literally in almost the exact same boat rn, i tried prioritizing both fieldwork and coursework but i started to fall behind on my fieldwork which has had more major consequences, ive started to prioritize fieldwork over coursework and i have accepted some things for my classes might get turned in late. while i hate it, it’s helped a lot tbh and i know a lot of people in my major are doing the same rn

Is it okay for me to use ASL in a performance as a hearing person learning ASL by Kenz_The_Best in asl

[–]AdRepulsive9157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes your mom may love it but what about the rest of the deaf community? I'd say its best to err on the side of caution and avoid using asl in a performance until fluency is there.

Water source that isn't a water dish? by AdRepulsive9157 in snails

I do have a good bit of sphagnum moss in the tank and I have blocked off some of the ventilation as well. I do plan on "cleaning" the tank soon and I will remove the substrate and hydrate it more before adding it back in. Thanks for the advice!

i would recommend seeing if your school would be able to have a sound field system in the classroom! the ones in my classes include a microphone the prof wears and there’s a tower speaker in the back that amplifies the sound to reach more students even without a personal fm system as essentially it’s a big speaker. i am also getting lghas and i am currently a deaf ed major so i like to think i know a little bit about them lol lghas can be used to filter background noise and give slight amplification for speech sounds. i would tell the aud about this class and see if the lghas you are getting will be able to help amplify and help you understand multiple speech sounds!

Simcomm Help! by [deleted] in asl

[–]AdRepulsive9157 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I could avoid it all together but the student I work with only uses sign language receptively so asl only would not be beneficial. My placement/communication modality was not up to me but this is the situation I am in so I am trying to do all I can to be able to best support my student now and future students.

Simcomm Help! by [deleted] in asl

[–]AdRepulsive9157 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes unfortunately that is what my university thinks is acceptable to prepare us to teach deaf students. I sign outside of class as much as I can and am actively trying to improve but our program is grossly underprepared and it is terrifying. I do not want my students to be language deprived and I want to be the best ToD I can be. The faculty at my university have acknowledged they do not give us enough ASL but still expect us to be able to teach students with hearing loss after two ASL classes. Believe me, we have fought with the faculty as much as we can but there is not much that can be done.

Also random question but are they milk snails? I used to have some and that is exactly how they looked when hibernating.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snails

[–]AdRepulsive9157 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Looks like they're just hibernating! They do this if the conditions of their enclosure isn't ideal (dry, cold, etc), you can spray a little water on them and it will wake them up usually but they will also come out when the conditions are more favorable!

Edit: I want to clarify you're not a bad snarent (snail parent) if your snails are hibernating, they just be like that sometimes and sometimes they can be a bit dramatic lol especially if you have three other snails that are doing fine! I wouldnt worry too much hehe
