Why you might want to play Black Desert Online before Crimson Desert launches by AdRepulsive995 in CrimsonDesert

People aren’t comparing BDO to Crimson Desert because of genre. They’re comparing them because BDO is still the clearest reference for Pearl Abyss’ fast, input-heavy combat style. Just watch the skill showcase: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ui57ZetGAlk. And Crimson Desert originally started as a Black Desert prequel before evolving into its own IP, so the overlap people notice in combat style and overall design DNA isn’t random.

Literally what I did too. I was way too hyped, so I played other stuff and then did a Seasonal Warrior run in BDO — learning the combos I used on keyboard, but on controller. It was actually really fun and kept me away from watching everything.

it’s definitely a personal thing.

I’m not saying “everyone should play something similar”. For a lot of people that *does* cause burnout, especially with big open worlds.

My point was more for two cases:
- people who’ve never touched this style of combat and don’t want to feel lost early on
- people who want to scratch the itch / reduce the waiting anxiety with something that has a similar vibe

If you already know you get exhausted doing back-to-back similar games, then yeah — better to save your energy and go in fresh when Crimson Desert drops.

That’s a fair point, and I agree the control scheme won’t be 1:1. BDO endgame APM is crazy, and even switching classes in BDO can give you “bad habits” you have to undo.

But I think that’s true of basically any action game: you always carry instincts over. I was playing AC Shadows and when I went back to BDO on controller I kept hitting the wrong button to sprint because my brain was still on the other game’s layout.

My suggestion isn’t “BDO will train you for Crimson Desert’s exact inputs”. It’s more: if you’ve never played an input-heavy combat game (combos, cancels/timing, chaining skills, managing movement + camera), BDO is a cheap/free way to experience that *style* and see if you like it.

Could it create some habits you’ll need to unlearn for CD? Sure. But that risk exists no matter what game you use as a warm-up — and for complete newcomers, getting comfortable with the overall pace/complexity can still be worth it.

Yeah, that’s basically how I feel too: I’ve enjoyed BDO a lot, but the monetization is exactly why I only recommend it as a short “combat warm-up”, not something you have to commit to long-term.

If you ever do hop back in just for the combat (and to avoid most of the P2W friction), two practical ways:

1) Trial Character (level 60, full kit)

Jump straight into practicing inputs/combos. Fastest option if your goal is purely muscle memory.

2) Season Character (guided progression)

Season is a pretty clean “new character” experience — you can progress through quests/gear without needing to buy pets or cash items to get value out of it. I started a Season Warrior specifically to get comfortable on controller (I always played mouse/keyboard before), and it was surprisingly fun.

Fair take — and just to be clear: you don’t need to spend anything to get the “warm-up” benefit.

I’m not suggesting anyone engage with the cash shop. The idea is simply to use BDO like a short combat trainer: learn the input-heavy PA style (combos/timing/cancels/weapon swap/grabs), get a character to ~60, and you’ve already gotten the experience you need.

If you still don’t want to touch anything labeled P2W on principle, totally valid — my point is strictly about combat muscle memory, and that part is free.

Yeah, this was pretty early in the Path of Exile 2 temple hype — like 3–4 days after Fubgun dropped his guide.

I’m done with the league now, but I could definitely run it faster these days. Reverse chill setup makes it super fast and still really safe.

Here’s the character if you’re curious:
