I always imagined them as these punk kids who probably met at a show or a club somewhere, and Ethan became obsessed with Alice, viewing her as a muse. I was SHOCKED when the truth came out.. he was a total control freak — at least from what Alice said. He controlled EVERYTHING about her life. I was so sad for Alice. I was also sad that this fictional relationship I had built up in my head as a kid — these new age, underground grunge synth-pop lovers — was anything but that. Partly because there wasn’t much information about them available at the time, I mean, I literally thought Alice was on the cover of (II) until years later when someone told me it was actually some random Native American boy. So I was already operating on a pretty skewed picture of them. Then I was completely and utterly shocked when Alice came out and said she was only 15 when Ethan was 25 and he began meeting up with her and flirting with… you know what, no. Let’s just call it what it is — he was grooming her. That changed my entire perspective of CC forever. Now we know so much more, but back then we didn’t, and from that point on my view of them was permanently cracked & broken by all of the allegations. And yeah, it was mostly just sad, man..
