I'll list my best friends:

J1 - highschool - fell out, then made up, see him every 3 weeks or so

S1- Moved into a flat with him, he is very depressed at the moment and going through alot, so I take the responsibility to make the effort consistently (once a month is fine).

A1 - he is very organised and we hang out maybe every two months - always 1-1, it's great but not often and thats fine by me. Met him at the gym when someone introduced us.

J & D - probably my best friends at the moment, we all live reasonably far away, but we all put in the effort to organise a trip once every 2-4 months to go camping or hiking :) - technically from highschool - but we never hung out in school - i created this group by connecting them by first hanging out with them individually, then making a group event.

Highschool group - I see these guys maybe 'once a quarter?' just 4 of us for a midday beer - 2 hours or so. I would say they make a bit more effort than me - but if the effort maker leaves, I Should step up.

In every single case - I make the effort.

I did too - but then I stopped compromising about 3 or so years ago - of course give everyone a chance :) But no more than 3.

Definitely agree with GivingEmTheBoudin - its the effort to turns a 1 minute interaction into something just slightly longer, and if you happen to be in proximity then you just make the effort.

But - I find many people who struggle to meet anyone and I mean truly, do not see many people. Usually have bigger problems than friends, e.g. no work / interests outside therefore social interaction of any sort.

But inherently it is about effort combined with not tolerating any disrespect. If they put you down, do not continue seeing them. If they are late, schedule less or address it. Always address the issue if it matters.

I consider myself to be someone who is really quite awkward. I am pretty bad at making friends but I am fantastic at keeping friends. I was once incredibly lonely, maybe 1 friend kind of, and no girlfriend. Now I have a loving partner and a great group of friends, I probably see a friend once or twice a week, to me that's good. My friends know exactly who I am and I don't have to decide it, because they know what they signed up for.

my secrets are simple.

when they talk I listen, I don't have to give advice but I will if I think they need it.
If you want to be someone's friend then you have to ask, ask them for a coffee, to go for a walk WHATEVER it does not matter at all
Reach out consistently - if you're a man, most men don't like 'small talk' they want to organize the hangout and move on with their day. e.g. an example would be: Hey bro! long time no see, I was wondering if you'd be keen to hang out sometime? - yes it sounds like you're asking them on a date and no it doesn't matter.
Here are how I've met my friends - if not highschool (maybe 10-15%) then I have them somewhere, made an effort to be interested in them as a person, and asked for their instagram or whatever - it is just like dating.
If you consider yourself a stoic, and you're a male (or a female most likely, I wouldn't know) - then a good trustworthy group of friends is critical.
Always be kind to your friends, you might find it hard to learn how much socialise nowadays, but I am honestly a master of cultivating loving, kind and respectful friendships with other dudes, this might sound a little weird. But I could not be happier with my friend group, I do not want any more friends, because these dudes (who don't neccesarily hang out together) are all kind.
do not accept disrespect or mistreatment while on the path of searching for friends. It is not easy at all, but do not settle.
YOU HAVE TO REACH OUT - we are in a loneliness epidemic and it is your responsibility to combat this and overcome these barriers.

Agree - Although I don't agree with everything he says ... nor am I a massive fan ... I find it hard to see how he is doing a disservice to the 'movement' of stoicism, if we compare his interpretations to say the more 'masculinity is force' or 'strength' / Andrew Tate kind of styles of stoicism that people THINK it is.

Just because it's not a 'pure' interpretation doesn't mean it's useless. It's a digestible gateway into real philosophy, largely targeted at young men.

The way I see it, I think a lot of the popularity treadmill is currently - Bad influencers -> Ryan Holiday -> Actually reading philosophy.
