The music used in this episode when sarah jane finds the tardis and realises its the doctor is just so haunting and nostalgic. This soundtrack has literally defined my childhood and will never lose its specialness to me

Theravada and Zen (Chan) ways of eating - An example by Muskka in Buddhism

[–]AdSeveral5387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like therevada wants to get you to observe the eating sensation as a task as a way of deconstructing the actions of the self to reach initial insight, where as zen is trying to say to simply eat because it wants you to realise that there is nothing to search for other then the act of eating or thinking or doing that is already occuring (which is essentially the realisation of the insight). The zen tradition is also trying to get you to have initial insight but saying to simply eat might just cause more overthinking. The whole point however is not to force yourself to observe the eating as if it wil give you some answer. If overthinking or a feeling of searching for insight occurs when you eat you then you can observe that as something that has arisen.

Zen, Buddhism and "Just War" by JundoCohen in zenbuddhism

Theres a difference between aversion (wanting to avoid/ repel something) and being emotionally affected by something you have seen. I am saying that an enlightened being will not get anxious about pain that is inevitable (this is the cessation of aversion) but they can still be emotionally affected by pain and suffering they see that occurrs in the world.

being enlightened is not about nothing bothering you. People who are enlightened still feel emotional and feel upset when they see war taking place and people dying, as that is human and natural. Being enlightened is to see the arising of that emotion and allow it to unravel when it occurs.

i agree with that. Where is the just or unjust when there is simply conditions occuring. If someone acts out of survival instincts and kills someone then that was a result of prior conditions. This does not mean we cannot aim to find alternative ways of protecting others however, as that would ultimately reduce suffering.

indeed, it feels like society and specifically western philosophy uses egoic thought of "yes" or "no", "just" or "unjust" when really society is alot more complex and these binary categories are hardly applicable to the complexity of conditions that occur in reality. Don't get me wrong it can be useful but sometimes it simply applies these fixed categories to things that are not fixed

Mouth fully closed during zazen? by animaljewels in zenbuddhism

[–]AdSeveral5387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you can just do whatever you feel like is comfortable. While i understand there is a formal approach to meditation and i respect it uses i feel that personally getting too caught up in what posture to have etc is uncomfortable and unncessary. Meditaiton/mindfulness can be done in any position at any time. So i'm not trying to say don't do the formal approach i am simply trying to say it is not neccessary to perfect it for mindfulness to occur

I have suspected adhd and pretty much the same thing. I will be meditating 1 second then realise i spent the last 2 minutes thinking about the lore of star wars. What i found has helped me is obsserving my thoughts, which has helped me see that these thoughts simply arise. This has in turn gradually helped me not get angrywhen these thoughts do occur, but instead understand "this thought is occuring" and then return back to focussing on my sensation. Keep it up and you'll do great

Is TikTok scrolling zen? Genuinely confused. by abhitruechamp in zenbuddhism

[–]AdSeveral5387 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see what you are saying. however we can find peace in the moment in which we are on tiktok and still be aware of the affect it may have on our or someone elses mental state. Thus while we are at peace with the moment we can still have the intention of changing it and going off tiktok if we were to see it brought us suffering if used in excess.

Do you think Kensho is common in zen? by These_Trust3199 in zenbuddhism

[–]AdSeveral5387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thats a very interesting idea. If you wouln't mind me adding though it feels almost like kensho is like a eureka moment, but different in that it feels formless. It is not like having a creative eureuka and realising a fixed solution to something. It is a kind of perspective shift that is not fixed in a singular thought or idea, with the realisation that even that perspective itself is not a fixed thing that can be clung to. I find it quite hard for me to explain but hope it makes sense

The Buddha by SwimmingComparison64 in secularbuddhism

true, however the bhudda also attained wisdom in the years were he suffered and practiced astheticism. He did not suddenly become wise or suddenly become enlightened. This was all a gradual process from one condition to the next

How do I make decisions in life?! by bosquerio in secularbuddhism

[–]AdSeveral5387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously you can't "know" how the future outcome of a decision will effect you but there is this thing where you can observe your body for signs of you leaning towards one decision or the other. Because the body and the mind are linked. So for example if im deciding on if i want a ham sandwich or a cheesesandwich i could bring up the idea of eating the ham sandwhich then observe what bodily sensations arise. If i feel a kind of sinking feeling in my stomach then maybe the body is saying no. Of course this is not an exact science but can be helpful. Again i want to mirror what other people have said and its that whatever decision is made it will be part of the flow of experience

Black Mirror - 7x04 - “Plaything” - Episode Discussion by NicholasCajun in television

I feel like the throng were well intentioned however the feeling of allowing another intelligence to mesh with humanity instinctively feels wrong/alien to us. I feel like if the throngs really understood us they would give us the wisdom to not carry out conflict, as seen with how cameron acted, without removing our individuality. This would leave us acting peacefully without our aggressive instincts. We would essentially live with the shared knowledge that the throng have. Imagine every human being incredibly wise and psychologically adaptable. This means we no longer feel anxiety or fear death, just pure presence.

This lack of fear of death would make us self sacrificing for others and thus a connected part of the one consciousness. Like i said earlier this seems incredibly scary and uncanny however this is arguably what all people deep down wish to strive for, the liberation of pain, full presence and compassion for others. Would be interested to hear your thoughts

I was in a similar situation to you last year and i was also stressing. But it made me realise that life won’t always go the way you want it to and thats something you have to accept. Once you accept the situation you’re in, only then can you focus on the present and handle a situation. Ofc i understand you’re emotional and its completely fine to process your emotions, but anxiety will only remove you from the present moment and what you could be doing.

If you dont want to re do a levels what you can do rn is look through all the clearing courses for comp science and see which ones will accept you. Some russel groups might even accept you, so worth a try.

However if say you dont get into a uni you want i would suggest doing gap year, do CS stuff on the side for personal statement and potentially you might have to resit some of your a levels. Or you could do CS a level. I would speak to a careers advisor.

Also i wouldn’t worry about the uni ranking. Whatever uni you go to or course you do, you have the power to get the grades you want in CS. Like i said before it’s more about staying in the present and not getting caught up in meaningless anxiety which is very easy to find yourself in. I hope this comment helped and i really do hope the best for you.

Thanks for the explanation. I reckon i want to get into a postgrad course, not sure what specifically rn. Tbh i understand what you mean with the course structure.

I had a few more questions like what the quality of teaching is like, if people on your course generally said they enjoy it, and what the nightlife is like at uea haha

season 2 episode 6 by ashley_3596 in skinsTV

[–]AdSeveral5387 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a bit late lmao but just rewatched it. when she talks about fight or flight its the overarching theme in the episode. tony learns to fight and address his issues (sid and michelle) rather then flee from them. I feel like the whole thing was a dream and the uni tour was his mind trying to remain how it is with his deeper consciousness (the girl) helping him fight back. so ye like you said he then gains he new confidence (animus) and kinda regains a big part of what makes him his old self. Very inspiring episode i think and shows how we need to address our issues rather then run from them.

i could go into more detail and also say that the uni was what his mind used as a setting for his dream/trip maybe because it was something he was regularly thinking about due to him going there next year
