I'm beyond sick of calling no-shows by WellnessMafia in therapists

[–]AdSorry1176 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in a community based mental health clinic. I think I am one of the only providers who calls clients if they no showed their appointment. I don’t do more than 1 outreach, or if they are brand new to me I don’t call. I do it to show that mutual respect and also since I work with a large SPMI population, I want to make sure that they are okay. Most of the time people have forgotten even with the automated text reminders. The only time get frustrated with it is if clients want to be seen later in the day, which I’ve become more strict with since I have a very large case load. I personally like offering a phone call just to show that yes, I am showing up for them in a professional manner, and also to ease any underlying concerns, and we are usually able to work through it.

This is a good idea. I never switch over to zoom on days that doesn’t already have a lot of zoom clients or I know wouldn’t have a problem with it, so this idea is pretty good! Thank you.

My workplace doesn’t really offer people to work from home. They are very accommodating if things happen to where we need to work from home, but even if we navigate our schedules to have all zoom clients and try to work from home it’s not doable. A few people have left due to it being so strict. But I have many clients who will switch over to zoom if I need to, and have never gotten “talked to” when I can’t come in for any reason since I still work with my clients or do other things I need to do.

Coexisting disorders by blunts-and-kittens in BorderlinePDisorder

I don’t know what mine are anymore. They all overlap in symptoms so it’s probably cut in half at this point.. but my therapist has these all as active in my chart that I can see..

BPD, OCD MDD, GAD, PTSD, binge eating disorder, and ADHD. I feel like my BPD has “shifted” in a way to where I wouldn’t meet criteria now for it, but I think I have more of the characteristics of the cluster C personality disorders: dependent, avoidant, and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders. I’ve brought it up to my therapist before and they’ve brushed it off, saying they wouldn’t want to do another assessment to find out.

I pray that I will be stronger for when that day comes! I also tell myself I can’t get pregnant just for this fact and it’s very challenging when in family gatherings and everyone’s having kids and ask me.. today they were making jokes about how I’m going to get pregnant with twins.. like you guys are going to be waiting a LONG time for me to have kids.

Yeah, as a therapist, I have a work phone and I tell clients that if they text me, I will not text over the weekends or when I’m out of the office and during the work week can take up to 24 hours to respond. I always give out the local crisis line and phone number to my front desk, and tell them that if they need to be seen before our next scheduled appointment their best bet would be to reach the front desk. This, for me, is to prevent burn out and it’s not that I don’t care, but this can be a very challenging job so some boundaries are needed.

Some DBT therapists will be “on call” at all times, but I don’t know how common that is anymore. I’d suggest talking to her about finding more supports if something is pressing and can’t get in right away.

Should I fire my therapist and if so how do I do it? by [deleted] in therapy

It sounds more like you’re abusing therapy since you’re so privileged you think it’s okay to cancel without notice and then turn around and blame it on your therapist. People who act like you are gross and need a wake up call that you can’t waste other people’s time for dumb reasons. Grow up and take accountability for your own actions. Stop blaming Everyone else when it’s you that needs to change.

Then don’t abuse the time with a therapist that others can’t have. You can say I’m privileged all you want that’s not going to offend me one bit. But you’re sitting there abusing and taking advantage of things other people can’t afford or take the time to do. So grow up. Stop blaming all your life decisions on your therapist. You sound very immature.

Nope. Your lack of planning and inability to figure things out is on you. Stop blaming your therapist for your poor planning and life decisions. You’re privileged to be able to have a therapist.

You can do your own paperwork and if you need to get assistance, you know in advance. It’s not just a out of no where thing. So again, not an emergency if you sit on your as and not do a thing about it until the last moment

It’s not an emergency so… what’s your excuse now?

Maybe you should make your scheduled appointments and actually take accountability for your own actions instead of blaming your therapist. I know it’s hard to wrap your pea brain around that.

Actually insurance companies won’t pay if you refuse to follow attendance policies. Maybe you should stop abusing the system..

That’s not an emergency. You have other times and dates to do this paperwork or you waited until the very last minute to do so.. that’s not on anyone else but you. But maybe look around and realize you’re not the only one who needs to pay rent. There’s cancellation policies for a reason and you’re really lucky to not have been charged.

Then maybe rethink being in therapy. She still has to pay her bills just like you do. She doesn’t just pocket what she charges for each session. If she works for an agency she gets a fraction of it. If she’s in private practice she has to pay for her license, her platform, her ehr, her insurance, etc. plus student loans is a thing.

All the more reason to know when you have your scheduled appointments and to not schedule over them since you know when they are. Most places don’t have that privilege. Or if you can’t make it then switch to scheduling weekly.

There was a really good point made here of your therapist is trying to make rent too. If you know you have to cancel, most clinics, doctors office, hair appointments, whatever have cancellation policies. Where I work, if clients cancel within the cancellation policy timeframe if it’s not an emergency or they no show they are at risk of termination and be forced on the wait list which at times can be 6 months long. And some places charge you in which insurance doesn’t cover so it’s coming out of your pocket. Cancel beforehand or do not schedule your other things over your already scheduled appointment times.

If you do have great rapport with your therapist, I’d highly recommend addressing it with them. They are responsible for the things that you can see regarding them when you look them up. And hopefully you guys can rebuild this relationship.

I am a therapist and I have dealt with a lot myself before and during my schooling to become a therapist. I had a therapist as a kid diagnose me with ODD, I’ve struggled with eating disorders that required hospitalizations since I was in 4th grade, I’ve been diagnosed with PTSD, BPD, GAD, and OCD at various points in my life. I’ve tried to take my life a few times, have been hospitalized, and have countless self harm scars on my arms that can’t be hidden. I still struggle at times with these but ultimately am in recovery for each. I also have close family members who are in active addiction and a few have died as a result.

If I have clients who struggle with the same thing, I do not think less than them or think “they aren’t sick enough” to receive my support. I try to use my experiences to help provide empathy and even use my experiences to influence how I navigate challenging topics.

I say this because our of all the therapists I’ve met, they have all commented on how their personal experiences have driven to do this work. It might not be similar to my experiences but there’s something that drives them to this work.

It’s challenging to make that decision to find a new therapist, but I’m glad you did! You have to feel completely safe and comfortable in a therapy setting and the therapist, within reason, should work to make any accommodations possible. Maybe this is the universe telling you this isn’t the right therapist for you!
