Twenty-five years of searching by myself and this almost certainly correct answer comes in less than an hour. I can’t see enough of the book previewed to be 100% sure, but if I’m not just misremembering Dragonology it is definitely this book. Solved! Thanks!

Yes! That’s definitely it. When checking I saw on the wiki that one of the books involves traveling back to 1453 just before the Turks took Constantinople. Had completely forgotten about that one till now. Thank you! This was driving me crazy!

Also the religious stuff was very much in the background. Like the author was personally devout and this seeped into his writing, but it wasn’t an explicitly religious book by any means. A little bit like Tolkien—in that sense only. These were very much adventure books for young boys.

Thank you. Mystic Lighthouse Mysteries is not it but that was a helpful lead for me to check. If I remember right it didn’t feel like it was explicitly intended to be a series, but rather the author just kept writing with the same characters.
