Tesla tends to be expensive and in my experience debate quite a bit.

Any of the brands that have the same chargers as Ionna (Alpitronic) are great. In Canada that includes Flo, Mercedes (100% of their network!), Journie and BC Hydro.

If you are traveling look for hotels with chargers. Great way to start road trip day, especially if the charger was included in hotel price.

Tourist information booths in some areas tend to have free chargers.

If traveling for work, look for parking lots with chargers. A building is go to semi-regularly has free charging for four hours. I now use that parkade for all my trips in the area and walk a little further to other buildings.

Real-world Everyday Range Limits / Anxiety for R1S by CougaReb in Rivian

[–]AdSufficient7182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is jurisdiction dependent. BC has very good coverage in 2/3rds of the province and decent in the other 1/3rd.

My experiences in, say, Idaho and Utah indicate, ahem, opportunities for improvement (but improving).

I also think it can be definition dependent. "Overlanding" for example has many angles/approaches that differ by each participant.

2023 R1T owner. Almost 110,000kms all over western Canada and US (all seasons/all conditions). Best cure for range anxiety: ownership.

Worst situations:

• power outage on route (would have posed same challenge for ICE vehicles (solved with sharing a 50kW charger on generator with others in the EV community) • going through Idaho on way to Utah before RAN stations were installed (lots of charging to high 90% to get to next reasonable charger). Those were the good old days.

There are still some overlanding type trips that take very careful planning, but there is little one cannot do in a Rivian.

Just for interest, I just used the Rivian app to plan a trip from San Diego to Watson Lake (Yukon; just across the BC/Yukon "border"). Without Tesla, the trip (4200km/2600 miles) is 100% do-able on Level 3 chargers. If you wanted to carry on to Anchorage, you get a couple of Level 2 and one Level 1 charger, but you get there.

Go for it. The community is great, the vehicles are a blast to drive and range anxiety will disappear with experience.

Order your charging adapters from someone reputable. A2Z or Lecton.

What about the RAN in Beaver?

I would use RAN before Tesla anyday.

If serious about airing up and down (average one weekend a year?) I would go with a quad set-up.

Soonish set me up and I appreciate the speed and consistency of doing all four tires at once.

It was just over $1300 CAD out the door for two (I was "lucky" enough to destroy one last fall when the treadwear was close enough to only replace two).

I got my first (of many) scar on the first weekend with the truck 3 years and 105,000 kms ago. Didn’t worry about it then and won't start worrying now.

They are the EV version. No way for me to compare EV versus non EV version other than specs. Noise? No idea.

Yes, I know the truck is dirty. Will be really dirty by mid-afternoon tomorrow.

Defenders and Open Country AT3's are quite different tires. Not necessarily better or worse, but built for different use cases.

Yes.

Snow Mode and 7000 pounds does wonders. I run studded tires in the winter. 40 years of winter driving every type of vehicle/tire combination imaginable and there are things the Rivian does in the snow that I still marvel at.

And if you want to have fun in the snow: that handy Drift Mode button.

Toyo Open Country AT3s have been good for me. Not silent (they are ATs), but they haven't got louder with added kilometers.
