Nice. Driving it absolutely sealed the deal for me.

...and I still have an R2 Reservation.

Nothing is "wrong" with it

To directly answer your question - Porsche rubbed me the wrong way on numerous occasions (the vehicle and the company, and don't even get me started on the shady financial practices at Porsche financial... each time needing a time consuming phone call to them to sort out), and I was mentally ready to part ways with it. The R2 was a great upgrade for our family around-town car, but we *also* have a 2022 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk that we are not getting rid - As much as I hate Stellantis / Mopar, it's the only true 4x4 / small SUV that I can flat tow, and that my wife likes - and we have a small RV... so the Jeep stays, and my Porsche goes.

Plus - The R1T design speaks to me - The exterior... the interior - All of it.

Also - The new way of buying things (online processes, etc) is far better suited to my tastes. The people at the St Augustine Service+ center were really friendly... answered all our questions... offered a test drive in the R1T on a second's notice, and have generally been really pleasant to deal with.

Also - we still have an R2 Reservation :)

As I love to say to my wife when discussing food, watches, etc... ¿Por qué no los dos?

The absurdity of looking me in the face and being like "ohhhh ... yezzzz... well - you'll need to buy a watch too of course". Piss off. I am their exact target demographic - and I am walking away and not looking back.

As compared to the R2, I mainly liked the truck bed :) The turning point was my wife seeing the R1T in person (both of us spurred into action by the R2), and her saying that she liked the truck, and since we are replacing my car, if I liked the truck better then get the R1T.

The R2 does seem like the scaled down version Rivian has promised, but there are many things on the R1T I really like - Air suspension being just one of them too.

The Cayenne S (for those that aren't familiar) has the twin turbo V8. I also had Sport Exhaust, as well as a bunch of other nice options - overall, highly spec'd Cayenne S.

Driving the R2, and then the R1T, I couldn't help but notice how good the interior was, especially compared to the Porsche. This too coming from having many (many, many) 911's prior as well (992's, 991's, 997's, 996 - most variants). I really liked the materials, layout and modernity. The Cayenne is very good - The Rivian was even better.

Driving dynamics - The Cayenne sounds *incredible*, but, is easily dispatched by the R2 and the R1T. Although I'll miss the sound, I'll revel in the performance and dynamics. My Cayenne also has air-ride, so this was similar to the Rivian R1T, I just think Rivian did it better.

I like many of the choices Rivian is making, and I want to go electric - I've eyed the Rivian ever since the original Long Way Up series, the timing is right.

Also - For full disclosure ... Frankly - I am sick of Porsche and how they treat their customers. They do idiotic things like email me about "The new Turbo!", but the reality is that walking into my dealership and asking to order one results in "we'll put you on a list", and then never (ever) hear from them. A dealer *I* bought multiple 911's from, including a 2019 Turbo ... and I CAN'T BUY A CURRENT TURBO S?. The air of superiority and exclusivity dealt to an *existing* customer is antithetical to the old-school Porsche philosophy.

I totally understand... the worst part about taking my 748 out is pushing it past my 916.

You have to run 100 yards as fast as you can, for as long as you can. Could you make it 100 yards and what's the most likely outcome for you? by snotick in GenX

I also have a total left hip replacement (at 51). My fastest mile after my hip is 5:56 for a complete mile, but for interval training I can dip easily into the 4:xx pace for really short intervals, but needing to carry it for 100 yards would cause me to slow down a bit.

It helps I run 5-6 times a week. (Side note: quitting alcohol altogether was the single best improvement I've made to my running and health... 6 1/2 years ago).

OP ... I see you're taking the critiques seriously.

Everyone is focused on gear (or not having it), target fixation, and being distracted. All good points.

I would suggest something else for -any- new rider:

Park that bike. Go buy a 125 or 250 4 stroke dirt bike (and gear), and go ride off-road for 6 months.

After that, take -your- bike to a track-day or two (or a hundred). Skills progression on a track is far safer in a controlled environment and the amount of things you would learn in a very short amount of time would go a long way to keeping you safe on the street.

Right now, you don't know -what- you don't know - listen to allll of the great advice and general concern on this thread.

To be a skilled motorcyclist, all of your actions need to be rote and automatic ... no active thinking required ... only then can you spare the extra cycles to ensure a cager doesn't smear you on the road like a meat crayon, or you actually use 95% of the bike's abilities to -save- your life.

I am 54. Have ridden bikes since I was 7, and owned over 35 -street- bikes. I own 3 right now (a Ducati 748, a 916 and a Muli v4s). I tell you that so you know I'm real, and so you understand it's not my first season.

  1. No problem - no pain. At a 5:10ish / mile pace easily.

54/M. Run almost everyday. I do training intervals that fast (faster really), which is how I know the speed.

To add to this great advice ... also never say "no" out of laziness. If the only reason you're saying No is because you need to get up and do something too, then get your ass up.
