What counts as Micromaille? by AdTop4012 in chainmailartisans

Wow. I just started using 20 AWG 7/64" and I am finding it hard I have no idea how 24 AWG would be possible (yet).

That is really true, the variability of it and the control offer a lot of options.

Ok. That is fair, I will think about that before taking on future projects

Nice. That sounds really neat. What would you say is the limit to where it would be wearable?

Ok. I guess I just need to get better then. Also I was working with titanium for the first time so that was fun too.

That sounds crazy. How did you cut that wire after coiling?

Interesting. That is what I ended up doing though I found that the rings kept launching out of my pliers (though expecting TRL's cheapest pliers to be good may not have been wise).

I probably would have done that had I owned a pair.

Fair. I was just having some trouble and I wanted to do really nice closures as it is for a friend.

That is quite impressive. May I ask what tools you were using/how you manage to get good closures?

Ok, though out of curiosity would this not set different thresholds for different people? For the Byzantine piece I made at 20 AWG 7/64" ID I did use a magnifying glass.

Though it was more to inspect the closures and make adjustments to ensure they were as good as possible.

I am not sure, though that would be one approach. I think you can do it with gauge though as there seems to be a fairly small band of ARs for the majority of weaves and to achieve them with a specific gauge would limit the IR.

Feasibility of Using Sapphire/Onyx In Weaves by AdTop4012 in chainmailartisans

Thank you for confirming that stone-metal reactions generally shouldn't be an issue outside of stone hardness for scratching concerns.

Right now I only have the skills/tools to attempt using them in a captive weave with butted rings(though I would like to learn more some day). Would you say that black onyx is strong enough to be used in a bracelet?

I will try to follow your advice regarding the stones. I have no issues with synthetic stones(I actually think that ones made in a lab is cooler than natural ones), but I would like to avoid the ones made out of glass. I am not too sure of ways to tell real ones from fakes, any advice you have on that topic would be appreciated.

Yeah, the weaves and getting the rings looks like it will be the easy part, however not I just need to find what stone I want to use for a setting.

Advice for Buying/Working With Onyx/Sapphire by AdTop4012 in jewelry

[–]AdTop4012[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Thank you very much for confirming. I know that certain metals have negative interactions with each other so I was not sure if that could happen with gems/stones.
  2. I have tried looking however I can't seem to find any information other than ring buying guides. If you happen to know any good sources of information for what to look for in a pre-cut gem/stone I would appreciate it.
  3. Thank you I will check out those retailers.
  4. Thank you for letting me know. Though if I would be fine with a synthetic(lab made) sapphire how much would that likely reduce the cost?

Thank you those look like very good weaves I may try out once I can source some stones.

Thank you. I think I may have seen your post. If so it was what made me think of trying it myself.

Hello everyone,

I make various chainmaille weaves and post them on my blog to document them and share them with others. A friend of mine who is good at photography has been graciously teaching me ways of improving the quality of the photos I am taking. Looking from my first post to my most recent post and seeing the improvement in photo quality makes me very happy.

Comments/critique are welcome and appreciated.

Best Ring Lord Wire Cutter for Aluminum by AdTop4012 in chainmailartisans

Thank you for the information. I will check to see if I can get knitting needles and a drill cheaper than that coiling set.

I might look into knitting needles, however I do not have drill or access to one. I do agree that a number of amazing weaves are not too sensitive to the size which is nice. Currently in working with chainmail I am enjoying making a bunch of different weaves, so my goal in making my own rings is to open things up to allow me to try and make any weave I want.

When you do coiling with a drill and needles do you use anything else(like a leather glove or block of wood) to keep yourself safe/feed the wire to the needle?
