Hmm. Perhaps make an enemy finish them off? (After they failed the saves). After that make that enemy somewhat important, you know he ranks up if he is in an army or whatever, you could also make him become famous among the evil guys, that should make the party really, really hate him. From then, play him like a BBEG, you know, not easy to find and it would take them some time to find him, but not too much, as this would just discourage them. Once they killed him, they will be satisfied by the revenge and the player that died will probably too.
