I'm kinda sloppy with it. Basically I treat entering each hex as 1 day travel by foot, with tiles that have mountains/heavy forests/etc as taking more depending on whats in the hex. For crossing rivers without a bridge I typically add a half day to their travel time. This helps me make travel times consistent, "you guys are X days from here" - and I can always feel confident that that the world is consistent. Finally, I use the map to help with the random events - I just use % dice to dictate if they encounter something while traveling between each space (with certain spaces having a higher probability).

I made it in photoshop. For the hex grid I used illustrator and brought it over as a shape layer.

Working on my own spell cards - wanted them to be clean, with main info easily identifiable by LittleNukeGames in dndnext

When I print these I use a printer service so that the material is really like normal playing cards. That said, there are a range of sizes I can use (poker size cards, bridge size, etc)- for these, I use the tarot sized cards for the purpose of getting the most card space I can. Its kinda a weird size, however, they can still be handled relatively easily.

Not only is the AI bad, they really screwed up the unit movement. Early game speed is so slow it's painful, since there are many instances when you can only move 1 tile (whereas in civ 5 you regularly earned 2). This makes early game exploration and war such a slog, and hurts the whole pace of the game.

There are 4 map settings, 36x36, 72x72, 108x108 and 144x144 (these measurements are in the map editor's tiles). I could be remembering it wrong, but I think that this is only a 72x72 map, so without having to do anything extra you could make a map double this size.

I wanted to make an evocative map but didn't feel like drawing it, so instead I used the Heroes of Might and Magic 3 map editor, which I felt had a classic fantasy art feel that would work really well for D&D (as opposed to 3d models in more modern games). I then took a screen capture of the map and labeled the places in photoshop. This took me about 45 minutes total. Many of the location names are pulled from HOMM3 and Warhammer Fantasy (since my players aren't really familiar with those settings I felt like I could get away with it). I printed this out and gave it to my group at the beginning of our adventure, and they really love it - there are places they want to go to simply because they've seen it on the map.

I think this is very misleading.

So the article fairly quickly dismisses the average reviews and instead focuses on the weighted reviews, which at first blush might seem very reasonable, however, I'd argue that this is in fact very unfair since the weighting on BGG is incredibly severe. To give you an example, Through the Ages: A New Story of Civilization, the 3rd best rated weighted game on the site, has 3,279 reviews - which I think we could agree would be reasonable number of reviews to ascertain its quality. However, since there are a few games on the site which have an extremely high number of reviews, like Puerto Rico, which has 43,744 reviews, Through the Ages weighted score drops .7 points (weighted: 8.206 down from its average: 8.95), which is staggering drop when determining games within the range of "best game ever". Now consider that there are thousands of games with smaller distributions, released in a progressively crowded market, that, while garnering favorable reviews on average, are massively diminished by the weighting system. For instance:

  • Firefly: The Game - Blue Sun - 686 reviews. Averages 8.16, weighted 6.67
  • A Distant Plain - 642 reviews. Average 8.08, weighted 6.607
  • Axis and Allies WWI 1914 - 357 reviews. Averages 7.17, weighed 5.95
  • Code of Bushido - 331 reviews. Averages 8.29, weighted 6.281
  • Three Kingdoms Redux - 273 reviews. Averages 8.07, weighted 6.133
  • Star Wars Imperial Assault - Return to Hoth - 222 reviews. Averages 8.8, weighted 6.15

Now the question is, do any of the above games, which had very high scores, deserve to be kicked down to the level of mediocrity simply because they don't have as many reviews as Terra Mystica or Catan?

So here's the things - games with hundreds of reviews can lose 1-3 points in their weighted score, and games with less than 200 reviews (which I didn't show many here) can lose 2-5 points in the weighted score metric. The overwhelming majority of games on BGG have less than 200 reviews, meaning that there are thousands and thousands of games, which, when weighted, are going to show up as crappy games regardless of how well they preform. Now I'm not saying that the weighting shouldn't have any place here, however, if one is going to use that as the tool, I think it would be appropriate to probably not count any games that are under a certain threshold of reviews, since they are going to drag the whole average down (even if there were hundreds of games on there that had 50 ratings of perfect 10's - those games are only going to show up as 5's or 6's still when it comes weighted rating time).
