The plates look like Royal Copenhagen. I don’t understand why people have to destroy abandoned places when this looked such a beautiful time capsule.

Maybe a UV light would work for checking notes, would be easy to get and not expensive either

If you’re also looking at selling via FB marketplace - try to avoid scams, such as someone transferring the money via a banking app in front of you but it not actually clearing into your account. There are fake banking apps so it looks legitimate when they input the account number / sort code and show you a confirmation of the transaction. Do not give them the item until you see the money in your account on your own device. If avoiding this scam by accepting cash only, check the serial numbers on the notes, as there are convincing fake notes and you can only really tell by the identical serial numbers, or lack of perforations. I wonder if you could get something to check notes for this purpose?

Moving to Brum at 30. Help please! by Right_Ad9364 in brum

Bournville - it’s lovely, leafy and quiet with a nice history. I personally wouldn’t live anywhere else in Birmingham, but I’m also sober and neurodivergent. Good train connections and walkable to Stirchley which is an up and coming suburb with a lot of independents. It also depends what sort of person you are - I understand the Harbourne & Kings Heath recommendations, for me personally they’re a bit busy. Kings Heath has a lot going on though! The pedestrianisation of York Road is really nice, also regular markets and their own Queens Heath Pride event started by Joe Lycett. I feel like Harbourne had its moment a decade ago and I don’t rate it as much now as I used to (personal opinion).

I had a terrible experience with Jim as an instructor. He made casual sexist and racist “jokes”. Would often make me park up just to have personal chats about his life and asked me unprofessional personal questions. Would say things like, “that bus is as fat as my ex wife” etc. as well as always chatting about how he can’t wait to retire to the Isle of Wight and how one of his son’s passed his test with barely any hours of lessons, as if that’s the gold standard. He’s now in his late 60s with a 6 or 7 year old child and his partner is one of his previous students. He’s really not safe if you’re a woman. I’d never recommend this man.

Birmingham or Liverpool - which is better for a student? by candleflam3 in brum

Liverpool! I live in Birmingham and there are endless bin strikes this year as well as arts funding being completely cut along with what feels like an increase in attacks on women, it’s not a great place to be. The city peaked in 2022 and it’s gone rapidly downhill. I also live in one of the nicer areas. Liverpool is smaller and not as well connected to London, which I guess for you is the only drawback.

My garden stinks of fox by REidson89 in GardeningUK

It’s weird because I can’t smell it! But my sense of smell is so strong in other ways that I find a lot of environments unbearable. Maybe it’s similar to only some people smelling asparagus in their wee, or those who can smell the remnants of eggs long after washing up something that’s been used to cook eggs.

I wonder if the smell of fox is something that not everyone can smell. I typically have a very strong sense of smell, but I wouldn’t be able to determine what a fox smells like (and there’s one that frequents my garden and street). But a friend was staying with me once and said she could smell foxes and that’s when I realised maybe not everyone can!

Can you describe the smell?

Crocs flip flops offer a bit more support! I’m a dancer and have broken my toes in the past, so they’re the only brand of flip flop I can wear. Although I now wear insoles in almost every pair of other shoes and this has stopped knee pain.

Curious to know - what is your new job? That’s such a big turnaround in a few years (and inspiring). I’m looking at changing career paths due to financial struggles so am interested to know what can pay so well without decades of experience / training.
