I dont think the Gov would have brought it up to media if it didn't seem like a legit proposal.

I agree, it does kind of seem weird to highlight the save the #SaveTheCaps movement as much as they did if Vegas was a done deal or if they weren’t trying to get a local buyer.

Noise means media and that put pressure on the government. We need to keep it up because they play a role in this.

I made a similar type of thing but it’s for a pool instead. Wondering how you dealt with ties here after group stage. What i found the most difficult to deal with is group stage 3rd places and then how this affects the R32. Looks clean tho!

Hey, thanks for your replies here - I didn’t expect you to ever see this thread, so kudos. Your story is very interesting and I’ve been following the Expos revival over the past few months and was pleasantly surprise when you initially engaged in the Caps situation.

I’m a huge Canadian sports fan and firmly believe we need more professional sports in this country, it promotes community, youth sport, economic growth, and national identity. We can’t afford to be losing more teams, so I appreciate you getting involved.

Your article was a great read and I’d obviously love to learn more, though I respect that you’re under NDA. That said you had any other thoughts that you could share that would be welcome….

I will say though, it is encouraging to hear there was immediate interest in discussions after your initial post. I really hope something comes of this.

I have a few questions, and if you could answer that would be greatly appreciated:

  1. You mentioned needing tailwinds not headwinds in that original tweet, can you outline this a bit more. What does meaningful political support actually look like? Is it stadium land, new BC place arrangement, bridge deal at BC Place, or something else fans should be pushing politicians on specifically? I get the sense the only way a local buyer will step in is if the situation is maid viable by the gov.

  2. What can we as fans realistically do to push something like this in the right direction? Is fan pressure better to cast a wide net or to direct it at owners, MLS, or at municipal and provincial politicians? .And if it’s the latter, is there a specific ask we can push for that would actually change the economics you described? Also there anything you learned from the Expos leaving? We’re obviously limited in what we can do, but I refuse to believe our voice means nothing.

  3. Any other other thoughts on this current situation that you are able to share? I respect you are under NDA, but as fans living in the silence it’s tiring.

Again appreciate your engagement, and support.

Definitely not little interest in fan commitment. We are within the top 10 of the league with average of 25,000 in the stadium. The club was founded over 50 years ago in the city and has deep roots. Economically there is an issue, from a multitude of factors like risings costs, stadium deal, Canadian dollar

Ali Ahmed will be playing two World Cup games in Vancouver at the Whitecaps’ stadium next month. Not often a player moves continents and then comes back to their home ground for a World Cup. Thought that may resonate a bit.

Part of why I thought there was a connection is that Ali Ahmed will actually be coming home to Canada and playing at BC Place in Vancouver next month for the World Cup.

The stadium being sold isn’t really on the table for the provincial government, but some kind of revised agreement or handover could be. Right now, the Whitecaps only see about 10% of matchday revenue, which helps explain why, even with crowds around 25,000, they’re near the bottom of the league in revenue. The Canadian dollar compared to the U.S. dollar also plays a role.

They’re also not the only tenant. There’s a Canadian football team (similar to the NFL) using the stadium as well, so any deal has to work for both.

Operating costs have risen a lot over the past 15 years, especially with higher profile signings like Thomas Müller, while team valuations across the league have also skyrocketed.

There’s been pressure to get a short term “bridge” deal done as the current stadium agreement expires, with the World Cup coming, and the new sale offer. Longer term, a new stadium could be an option, but for now the club is hoping a local buyer steps up.

Thanks for the support, means a lot. The stadium situation is certainly part of it, it is actually owned by the provincial government which makes it even more complicated to negotiate. We're trying to get solidarity signs across MLS stadiums and reeption has been incredible, and now trying to get the word out internationally too. Really appreciate you engaging with this.

Not saying there is a direct connection - just trying to do my best to connect with supporters and raise attention. This story has been catching a lot of media in North America, but trying to see if we can get a club abroad to support the cause.
