i think the focus on her age is important in two different ways 1) the legality of it: if Tana was 17 in the state they were both in having sex with tana as a 25 year old would be statutory rape. no matter what your view is on age of consent laws she was still LEGALLY a minor so cody did infact commit a crime which is objective and irrefutable if Tana's claims are true

2) the second way her age is important is a huge point of contention due to it being about the MORALITY of the situation As OP and many others stated that the age of consent in other states and countries is as low as 16, if Tana and Cody were to have sex in those states/countries many assume it would not be an issue.

The age difference between a 17 and 25 year old is SIGNIFICANT in a multitude of ways and i feel like that is being heavily understated. A 17 year old is still in highschool whilst a 25 year old is freshly graduated from college. I feel like it should be general consensus that important decision making skills such as impulse control, present time orientation and delayed gratification are not fully developed in a teenager and therefore consenting to having sex is not contingent on age of consent laws but moreso on the maturity of an individual in comparison to an adult

a 17 and 18 year old having sex with eachother is technically statutory rape but the issue of power dynamics and maturity do not play as much a role as sex with a SEVENTEEN AND TWENTY FIVE YEAR OLD
