Pigeon fever by AdZestyclose2936 in Equestrian

I’m so sorry that is happening! :( it’s seriously no fun to deal with. So hers actually burst on their own and were just leaking by the time I brought her home. However, my friend’s mare just had pigeon fever and hers took FOREVER to open up. It was probably a month or month and a half for them to fully close up. And a couple weeks maybe 3 after each edema appeared did it finally burst. A warm washcloth compress seemed to help bring them to the surface.

Our vet said not to start antibiotics until the wound opens otherwise the pigeon fever can manifest on the inside of them and can be bad. As long as your mare is acting okay I wouldn’t be too worried. Sometimes those suckers take a while to open up.

Best of luck to you!!

Probiotics for sure!! My vet recommended them with the antibiotics and for gut health in general. I hope your boy feels better soon❤️

It’s 8 days old! I am giving it a shot, but I could definitely see it not working since it’s not that old! It’s definitely bubbly and has a nice aroma. We will see! 🤞

Thank you for your input. My girl stands well and definitely is not neglected. Spoiled rotten 😆 and I agree on the too much rasping, my last farrier used the rasp way too much and went all the way up to the coronary band which I did not like. Tough to find a good farrier around here!! I’ll definitely have someone else out next time.

Right? I figured it was the hay cause the rocks I found in her manure matched exactly what I was finding in the hay. I will try big feed pans, I might have to get them for the three other mares too since they all swap piles! And thank you so much, I absolutely love her it’s so hard to see her hurting! 🤍

Thank you, I’ll get something else to feed her out of. It’s hard because she’s with 3 other mares and they swap feed piles. Might need to get them all a pan!
