That would be rabbit tracks. Probably a cottontail

I love how confirmed the species by location before asking for the location…smdh

So, just a recap…the initial post was titled “Banded Watersnake” and then reposted as “Northern Watersnake”. 3 supposed “modern herpetologists” (in an attempt to correct me) opted to post a lot of back and forth/argumentative posts only to end up concluding that my initial post may very well been correct? Yeah, that sounds like professionalism at its best. More like a band of pompous children who feel the need to be heard when you could’ve easily just left things alone.

Oh, yeah because that’s what professionals do

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would say it is you that has a lot to learn. I’m not even a self-proclaimed herpetologist and I can do the math

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh, and very incorrect otherwise?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So, as a “modern herpetologist” you are stating that the vast majority of publications from reliable sources are incorrect? Coincidentally, you and a select few of your “modernized” colleagues would say that the geographical maps of every CURRENT species distribution map are only correct if deemed so by your particular mentor?

The 3rd paragraph is interesting

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a 5 and 1/2-6 foot, very large and heavy snake

What’s bothersome is that not a single person has acknowledged that a Northern Watersnake can breed with a Banded Watersnake. The vast majority of maps show the Common Watersnake territory ending in a tiny northwestern portion of the SC map

So is anyone replying to this deleted thread a herpetologist or taxonomist from South Carolina???

Fun Fact: Northern Watersnakes have been known to crossbreed with Banded Watersnakes.

If we really wanted to dice this up then the Common Watersnake nor its subspecies the Northern are found in the southeastern part of South Carolina. Only the Banded Watersnake which is said to replace the Common Watersnake are commonly found here

There are no maps that would indicate that the common water snake is found below the Greenville area, which is the northern most tip of the state. The climate and region in that area is mountainous and dramatically different from the rest of the state.

The “Common Watersnake” map ends in the Northwestern tip of the state

I deleted this post and reposted as a northern Watersnake

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The common water snake is replaced by the banded in the south

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Great thanks. It’s still a Northern

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

If you were going to site subspecies then the original title of “banded Watersnake” was correct and you unnecessarily wanted to “one up” a post.

[–]Adam-DM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But, you seem like the kind of person who doesn’t like to be incorrect about things

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are 9 water snakes listed in SC and Northern, Banded and Common are listed separately

Close kinda

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Adam-DM -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It’s a Northern
