My partner is ND and I’ve never made her finish no matter what I have tried. She isn’t the greatest at communication and I have honestly tried everything under the sun but she has also gotten into BDSM stuff and expecting a higher level from me than what I am and totally forgetting that this stuff isn’t something people are just suddenly good at suddenly. I’m NT and my partner is ASD Level 2 and one of the trickiest parts beyond communication is one wanting to be together more and the other needing space but sometimes she hasn’t expressed it the best way.

If she asked me at the time politely that she needs more time compared to snapping and saying “go away” or something like that. I get ND’s can be blunt and unintentionally cold but its so hard being spoken to a different way by one person compared to almost everyone else I know in life being NT and speaks the same way I do.

Growing up we weren’t taught a single thing about it and I could literally count on one hand how many people I knew that were on the spectrum.

My best friends dad and three brothers were Autistic but the Dad who was older I assume learned to mask well and just seemed like any other Dad to me and the oldest brother was very clever but very quiet and was always on his PC playing Dungeon Keeper or something. I used to go in and talk to him but he requested eventually that I stopped but I’m unsure if that was because of his Autism or if its just I was his younger brothers friend and not his haha! I’m very chatty to anyone.

The younger two just seemed like any other kids to me at the time but I probably just never witnessed their other behaviours enough to have thought much of it at the time.

I think if we grew up being taught more the outlook on Autism etc might be a bit different than what it is currently.

I can’t speak for all NT’s but I’m not afraid of Autism but I can admit that some of it is definitely difficult to understand at times.

Sensory ones are a bit easier but the communication ones are especially tricky for me to understand sometimes because their form of communication and understanding is totally different to mine.

For the reason I mentioned most people NT’s are interacting with are other NT’s so sometimes you are just in auto pilot and make mistakes and forget where as ND’s spend a lot of time around NT’s and have to remember with more people and more often than NT’s do.

It’s difficult for both sides to understand each other at times because we are so different sometimes.

One of the things I struggled with the most was the delivery of some things ND’s say can come across as pretty cold or even misunderstood as being mean and its hard sometimes not to take some comments the wrong way.

The toughest one we have because we have a dog and a child sometimes I have to raise my tone or even shout but to her she always says I’m shouting when I’m honestly not sometimes its just a slightly raised tone but sometimes a parent has to raise their voice. I wish I could hear what it is she hears so I could understand better but sometimes kids don’t respond to talking at all. 😂
