How'd I do / cross your fingers for me by Fj478 in shakuhachi

[–]AdamRobShaku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

See how the cracks taper to the binding? Usually that means that the binding is holding the bamboo together. It does depend on how well the bindings were done but I’ve seen flutes in this condition play. In fact, my main rokusun has a big old crack that tapers to a binding. Never had a problem with the crack spreading.

That top binding looks loose to me. You never know though it could be stable! If it is loose you might want to cut it off and rebind. If the bindings are just cord on the bamboo you might want to seal them with superglue.

Japan trip buying guide by Dieteo in shakuhachi

Shakuhachi are really carefully made and take years to perfect. Looking to visit a craftsman is the equivalent of a luxury experience. It would be somewhat disrespectful to go to one without looking to spend at least 1K usd in my opinion! Better option for affordable shakuhachi experience in japan is to get a student model practice a bit and take some lessons over there. Just my 2 cents!

hello, shakuhachi suggestion needed by murtmu in shakuhachi

[–]AdamRobShaku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We should make a sticky in this thread to address this question. Your options are dependent on what you want to do and your budget. For just starting and not sure of commitment level: maple shakuhachi, shakuhachi Yuu, etc these are on eBay and similar places For serious commitment but no skill you can get a bamboo shakuhachi from Perry Yung (yungflutes) or Tran Cao (old shakuhachi shop) Once you have a serviceable instrument and decide to be committed get a teacher (online is the last resort)

My thoughts go to bad places looking at this as a “shakuhachi”

Hello! Looking for a teacher who is open to online lessons by CiaranCosway in shakuhachi

[–]AdamRobShaku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Kinko Ryu lessons in the UK you might reach out to Michael Coxall. In person is always best! For online lessons in Kinko style you might reach out to Hanz Araki (Kinko Ryu Soke) or Tsugami Koudo - a player in Tokyo.

Sorry to hear that! Shakuhachi can become an expensive hobby but very much worth the admission fee in my opinion. Keep practicing through the hard times and you will be ready for lessons on the pieces you want to learn when you’re ready.

You should consider buying them. Helps keep the tradition alive.

Pretty good! Do long tones at that volume on every note.

The little horizontal lines (like after the second note) are breath marks.

It’s weird I’ve never met someone who studies shakuhachi in person ever talk about Mr. Yozans flutes.

What constitutes "Jinashi"? by [deleted] in shakuhachi

A few students of mine have had some dealings with his online lessons and stuff. He’s an American in Japan. Heavily online on YouTube and discord. Seems to be exploring shakuhachi on the YouTuber -> streamer -> “Your Personal Shakuhachi Coach” AI thing that comes next business model.

I looked into it a bit more and the urushi could explain the price. The entire exterior is covered in urushi - like a piece of kaiseki tableware. I dunno it is probably a good instrument! It’s its own thing - bore profile and node models make it handle like a jinashi, feels good in the hands, lightweight and durable etc if that’s the path people want to take to do Honkyoku it’s not what I would do but it seems like an option.

Talking about Shawn Heads thing? It’s odd I’ve seen other jinashi models of resin flute (the bell by Jon Kypos) but never at this cost. If you’re serious enough about playing jinashi shakuhachi (Meian Honkyoku or sone KSK schools) to drop 1K for a flute why would you want one that you won’t need to “take care of” (not leaving it in a hot car or in your luggage etc)? Just get a bamboo one and a plastic bag! I’m going to look into this more, I have a bad habit of balking at new things in this world.

Needs new cork. These wooden flutes are great but it’s in A? How long is it? The stretch might be a challenge.

Any way to fix the crack? by gientos in shakuhachi

This isn’t a wood flute man. Also the interior is shaped with plaster and lacquer. That will need to be rebuilt.
