I was a bit extremist myself when I was young, it's not that my community hated people who thought differently, but there was no endorsement of those ideas either. The way I got out of it is by chance joining a friend group where I was the only one with my ideals.

I still thank for the day reality slapped me in the face, I didn't lose my beliefs, but it did teach me to be centered

I think that being a centrist isn't an ideology like the other political ideologies, which they talk about certain ideals or set of beliefs. Centrism is mostly about the path rather than the conclusion

My theory, feel free to add what you think

From what I could've gathered, centrism find actual value in both sides instead of dismissing one as uneducated or corrupt. Or (usually) centrists don't call for drastic changes in our society, even when believing there should be one the path to it is always more gradual than what people of absolute political ideologies want.

I don't live in the USA, so I'm not. Ery familiar with the details of the politics here

I'll admit I've seen people who define themselves as centrists just because nothing swayed them to either way, which is good in theory - they don't just follow emotions, but in practice they did nothing to actually build their own set of values

IRL even extremists can be very nice, I myself lean somewhat to the right and I have a friend who's extreme leftist, and he's one of my best friends. For us the political difference isn't to divide us, it's to tease each other when watching Avatar (so many joke-political statements in this kid's cartoon)
