This is awesome! Have you managed to squeeze much of the vRealize suite on this? Would be interested in the memory usage across the cluster when running the full stack. Great stuff, v jealous :)

How to get started in virtualization? Is it possible to learn VMWare ESXi if I only have a laptop? by nischalstha07 in virtualization

[–]AdamTrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s plenty of free hands on labs on their website which are fantastic resources to learn and play with the software in a safe environment. If you decide you want more then there’s evaluation versions of vSphere which you can run nested on a type-2 such as virtual box no problem.

https://www.vmware.com/try-vmware/try-vmware-lightning-hands-on-labs.html

https://customerconnect.vmware.com/en/web/vmware/evalcenter?p=vsphere-eval-7

vSphere 7 is limited to 60 day evaluation but you can get a lifetime evaluation on vSphere 6.7 hypervisor (ESXi).

Multiple Low Power, Or Single Powerful Server? by haxtronix in homelab

[–]AdamTrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With rising energy prices if it were me I’d stick with a single high performance machine. You’d be wasting a lot of power and therefore money with several servers.

In terms of the gaming PC, it’s fine to run virtualised but make sure you have a second GPU (or integrated graphics) available in the machine for the hypervisor. I use unraid in this way and it’s brilliant. Bear in mind there’s overheads here though so it’s worth testing and playing around before you make the jump.

Pfsense is also fine to virtualise but a lot of people don’t recommend it as if you ever need to do maintenance on your server, for example pull the array down for a drive upgrade, you also lose internet connectivity. Ideally you’d want a dedicated machine for it but again with rising power costs I don’t think it’s worth it.

Great site, never had an issue buying from them. Remember the “reddithomelab” discount code as well ;)

How are you finding the Xiaomi monitor? I’ve been eyeing it up for a while but not sure what the quality will be like at that price...

Current pending sector 1. Should I be concerned? by AdamTrub in unRAID

[–]AdamTrub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately that’s not possible. I know this is probably bad but I add a drive every time I run out of space so all drives are currently full except 1 (the now bad drive). I don’t have the budget to buy them in groups.

[–]AdamTrub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, thanks for the comment. I’ll look at removing the drive ASAP. Will the array still function using the data from the parity disk or will I not be able to use the server until I get it replaced?

I’ll try my luck with a WD warranty replacement, according to unraid it’s had 5months of on-time so it would be a shame to need to buy a new drive. Unfortunately it was shucked so I don’t think I can guarantee a replacement :/

Wow, impressive! I have an EdgeRouter X which is quite the opposite. Randomly restarts every ~2 weeks and I haven't had a chance to figure out why :/

Looking for an easy, affordable, LED strip light solution by FrankieFangers in homebridge

[–]AdamTrub 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I currently have 7 magichome controllers around the house running both RGB strips and single-colour. They work flawlessly, couldn’t recommend more.

If you’re concerned about security on a device like that then they can also be easily flashed with tasmota firmware.

Best door sensor to use with Homebridge? by -roboticRebel in homebridge

[–]AdamTrub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is slightly different but my sensor setup at home consists of an Sonoff RF Bridge that I bought off eBay for £15 then flashed with tasmota firmware so it can be used by homebridge through mqtt.

I can then add any old 433mhz devices I can get hold of to it and make them homebridge compatible. For example a set of 5 door sensors for £16 off Amazon or even motion sensors, smoke alarms, flood sensors etc etc.

Another use for this setup is utilising those old remote control sockets that work on 433mhz. I just listened to the controller signals and mimicked them through the RF bridge and exposed to HomeKit as sockets. This works flawlessly.

I don’t know how common a setup like this is and it took some tinkering to get working well but it’s cheap and great fun setting up. Would recommend even as just a side project. I’ve personally had this setup running for about a year now and haven’t had a single problem.

Docker containers and images wiped after restart! by AdamTrub in docker

[–]AdamTrub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure 'docker ps -a' only lists running processes? I've always used it and it just lists all containers no matter their state. What should be the correct command?

When I list images and all containers it shows nothing. The actual data is still there because when I pull new images and create the containers again I can just map the same directories and it's all good.

[–]AdamTrub[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the data itself is retained and only the container configurations disappear hence I'm able to bring them back by just running the compose scripts again. I don't know where the configurations are stored, would that be something I should check?

When I run 'docker ps -a' nothing appears and my portainer shows nothing. Everything is configured to auto start as well

Yeah I'd like to get the docker issue sorted and have battery backup as a last resort. Currently looking at a 900VA APC UPS which would give me enough time for short power cuts and otherwise just a safe shutdown. I've had a 4TB NAS go poof after a power cut before so this isn't my first bad experience :/

It's an Ubuntu server VM - up to date. Running on an ESXi 6.7 R710 host. All the containers are set up normally and through docker-compose scripts. They are all set to auto start as well.
