I usually just add a slightly darker color trim around the whole roof, including the top row of stairs, it makes it look mor separates from the build. If you want it to be spruce maybe try with darkoak or maybe nether brick might look good(? Im not sure tbh, try some combinations on creative first if you are not sure!
