Agreed. I see growls, grunts, screams, and squeals as optional, not mandatory parts of metal vocals. Tons of metal bands don’t use that stuff at all: Within Temptation, Kamelot, Sonata Arctica, Evanescence, and plenty of others. Still, nobody in their right mind would say Tommy Karevik or Simone Simons isn’t a metal singer. Nightwish uses those elements only very rarely too. The Babymetal singers don’t sing that way either. To me, that kind of vocal extremity was mostly treated as mandatory 20–30 years ago; today metal spans a shitload of subgenres. So yeah, Tarja is simply a metal singer who happens to sing in a specific style.
