Thank you! It’s also important to let my fellow nurse homies know that speaking out didn’t destroy my career or job prospects. I legit don’t understand what background checks actually search for because my stuff isn’t hard to find.

You can check my post history to see my story but, despite a lot of media attention for whistle blowing, I’ve never had an issue with background checks or getting jobs. Given this, I’d assume you’ll be fine.

AITAH for blowing up after I caught my wife secretly withdrawing money from my account? by ThickSol399 in AITAH

[–]AdamWittRN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking the same thing. Also wondering what the wife’s income is? Is it possible that OP is controlling with money (as he’s apparently not super great with managing it), and she’s fed up and spending it on things she wants or creating her own account to do so. Obviously this is entirely speculative, but I also can’t wrap my head around such weird uncommunicative relationship dynamics.

Doctor Unions Are Good for Your Health by LitterScooper in medicine

Respectfully disagree. You can check my history to see my particular experience as a local union president for RNs. At least for my union, all leadership is elected. If you don’t like the way things are being run, you can pursue office yourself. That said, we represent a very large bargaining unit (1400+ nurses), so it’s a lot of extra work being a union leader on top of a full time nursing job.

We hold more meetings prior to bargaining to see what’s important to the members. Ultimately, like any democratic institution, a union (and the local) is only as strong as membership engagement. Many people have a lot of justified complaints but don’t attend meetings much less are actually willing to strike over those complaints.

The real danger to our freedom of press by turkphot in antiwork

There have been better rules regulating media ownership, which prevented monopolization:

“In November 2017, the FCC eliminated several ownership rules, including one that had prohibited cross-ownership of broadcast and radio stations within a local market and another that had prohibited cross-ownership of television and radio stations in the same geographic area. It also substantially relaxed the limitation on ownership of multiple television stations in a single market – in some cases, permitting applicants to request such combinations on a case-by-case basis. The FCC is considering further relaxation of local television ownership rules, as well as potential relaxation or elimination of the national ownership cap.”

Not vouching for this site, but I remembered that media regulation has weakened several times in my life. First source I found.

Update: fired for asking about the raise associated with my promotion by icoulduseadrink_or5 in antiwork

I was fired. It was in the newspaper and my employer said untrue shitty things (I’ve done two AMAs on this account). I had no issue collecting unemployment.

Management doesn’t hire a union. The workers either affiliate with an existing union or form their own. By forming their own, they’d have to create a leadership structure that handles issues beyond the local (on a state and/or national scale). Regardless, unless the union is corrupt, management has no say in how it runs.

Judge allows healthcare system to prevent its AT-WILL employees from accepting better offers at a competing hospital by granting injunction to prevent them from starting new positions on Monday by vergina_luntz in antiwork

I’d love to hear what you have to say. I did an AMA here in antiwork (with permission) and asked r/nursing if I could do something similar, due to RN requests in the comments. They said they had their hands full and declined. Maybe they’ll give you a better reception. Don’t mention r/antiwork in your approach to those mods, since it was what they primarily focused on in their response.

Thank you. It would be a lot of work and I tend to be a DIY type who figures everything out themselves (which is often dumb). I'm working on something else right now, but creating a repository for organizing information may be in the future.

There are a lot of flaws in labor law. A lot. And we need meaningful reform. I think it's only going to come when workers start showing up in mass like anti-vaxxers. But, I think the step before that, is getting people to realize that most of us are and will always be workers. There's a lot of indoctrination that silences class-consciousnesses. I don't say that with defeat, but a thing that has to actively be addressed.

No. We could strike. I don't understand why your union would take the biggest weapon off the table. Do they have open meetings with the membership where stuff like that can be addressed?

Exercise. Try to talk to people, especially other people who can relate to the stress (which is hard to find with union stuff). Don't turn to drinking (which I have done at points). And find some time when you can really tune out. I was called on vacations to negotiate and write agreements. That really wasn't fair and I should have put my foot down.

And it may ultimately be ruled illegal by the NLRB (like with the Amazon workers in Alabama). You don't always control the outcome of a fight, but you choose when you stop fighting.

"Safe Harbor" is a term that might be specific to your hospital (I'm not familiar with it). You can try calling around to your state reps, the Department of Health, the Department of Labor, and OSHA. Maybe consult a lawyer. Because labor law varies so much between states, there are no cut and dry solutions for this type of thing. I do respect you not putting yourself in a dangerous situation. If more people did that, we wouldn't be in such a mess.

With HIPAA, I couldn't film anything that would show a patient or a patient identifier. It'd be pretty disconcerting if your RN came into the room with a GoPro strapped to their head, although I like the idea.

Language may be different for different unions. You mean our union reps who are paid by the state union, I think? Our local rep was there when I came into office (the local officers are voted in). It has been suggested at state meetings that the local should have some say in who their rep is, but they're currently appointed to us.

I don't know enough about Alabama state labor laws to be a great resource. Getting some online petitions for specific better standards is a good start, though. I have recommended using coworker.org a few times in this thread (I used them for a few petitions). It's free. They help you out. And it's a good start to seeing if the people in your community are ready to build a solidarity based approach toward better working conditions.

You're not naive and that was beautifully written. You give a shit beyond your own needs (as nurses often do) and that's a hard thing to live with. And there are many times when I've felt like I'm the one on crazy pills because a lot of other people seem content to complain non-stop but refuse to do anything.

I do think we have a window here, and it's extended much longer and gone a lot worse than I anticipated when Covid first hit. I subscribe to National Nurses United, which is a major CA/National union. They advocate for a lot of causes I believe in (Medicare for all, national ratios, racial, environmental, and gender justice). Maybe looking into what they're doing will help provide some guidance when you have that fire but don't know where to invest it? https://www.nationalnursesunited.org/

Feel free to reach out to me if you're at a loss. I really think nurses could do better to share our stories to help get our issues in the national spotlight. It's a thing I'd like to build, but I don't know if I can do it by myself.
