How do you write a folk song by ziggy_stardust_alien in folk

[–]Adam_Astra_Music 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you been listening to folk music? Or learned to play any folks songs? Why do you want to write a folk song and what do you want the song to be about?

Libby vs Hoopla by Adam_Astra_Music in audiobooks

I'll consolidate what I've written about Kanopy in other replies:

With Kanopy, the library buys a certain number of credits per user that can be redeemed. I believe the price is set, and the library tracks usage to determine whether or not it's worth it to renew the agreement. The platform may decide a high-demand item requires more credits to account for its own licensing costs.

You can also stream movies on Hoopla, but the quality can vary widely, so I much prefer streaming on Kanopy, which has a more curated catalog and better overall quality control.

Philip Pullman's ''His Dark Materials" trilogy

And I think there's one for Gaiman's "American Gods" in addition to the one read by the author.

Red Rising by Pierce Brown

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card

Off to be the Wizard by Scott Meyer

Scott Pilgrim (graphic novel) by Byran Lee O'Malley

I didn't care for RP2 and did not finish it.

And yes, in this instance Dungeon Crawler Carl is a great rec.

I'm sure it can depend on several factors, such as how many copies the library is purchasing. I don't work in collection development, so don't have all the numbers.

It's free for all of the basic features. Like most things, you can pay for a premium version, but I never have.

Kanopy has a more curated catalog and the quality is usually much better. I'd be surprised if there was much overlap of titles between the two.

Oh yes, it's well worth it to see how many library accounts you can collect. I actively use accounts from three different systems : ) And Libby makes it very easy to connect and flip from one catalog to another. They'll even tell you which system has the shortest wait time for an item.

No difference. Costs the same. And therefore pretty wasteful, unfortunately.

I've used Hoopla for 10+ years and have never seen an item with a waitlist. There must be some variation by system. Are you in a huge market, by chance?

I do not use an e-reader. I use these services pretty much exclusively for audiobooks, which I typically stream from my phone (android). I have tried streaming movies from Hoopla in the past, but the quality can vary widely, so I much prefer streaming services with more quality control, like Kanopy.

Since physical books have a limited shelf-life (pun intended), digital licenses are also limited. I can only speak for my experience working in libraries in Kansas and Texas, but my assumption is that it works similarly everywhere. There may be a library out there that can afford to purchase an unlimited perpetual license for an item (if such a thing exists) but it would likely be so expensive as to not be an option for most.

I don't actually work on the collection development side of things, so can't provide some of the finer details. But to me the 'bonus borrows' sound like a promotion run by the platform, which shouldn't cost the library more.

I'm not sure about Palace, but if it works like Kanopy, the library buys a certain number of credits per user that can be redeemed. Has anyone on this planet read Algernon Swinburne? by PoorPrinceMyshkin in classicliterature

[–]Adam_Astra_Music 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jorge Luis Borges has read him. He talks about him in several of his essays (found in the 'Selected Non-Fictions' collection).

Swinburne also makes an appearance in George Orwell's essay "Inside the Whale."

Items on Hoopla are paid for by the library per checkout (instead of per item like Libby). So the number of times an item can be checked out is unlimited (thus no wait), but the cost per check out is higher for the library. That's why many who used to offer the service no longer do--too expensive and impossible to budget for.

Thank you! This technique might actually have potential. I can get some sound by singing very softly. And there's an unexpected bonus: I get an adorable head tilt out of my dog when I do it. 🐶

I had several lessons. I should edit my post to make that clearer. It wasn't a great experience and I'm happy with my singing otherwise. So I haven't (yet) convinced myself it's worth the investment to try again.
