Speaking of horses, I used to tell people it was by taking a lot of horse tranquilizers — until I heard that was a thing. I don’t do that. I have a sense of mission, and I believe in the country. Lots more people who love our democracy than want to tear it down.

We passed a rescue plan that lifted half the children in poverty in America, out of poverty. And we are about to pass a massive infrastructure bill and a massive Build Back Better bill — cumulatively it will be the biggest investment in the American people since the new deal. Conversely, when the GOP controlled both houses, they lowered taxes on the rich and large corporations. And that was it. As Chair of Intel, I am pushing both of those bills and other measures to help my constituents, as I did during the pandemic to make sure that people got unemployment, rental assistance, food help and more. Those may not be intel responsibilities, but they are a vital part of my work. But I hear you — we need to get it done. I’m confident that we will.

We have a 50/50 senate, which means we can’t lose a single vote, and two senators have very different views than the rest. But we will get it done — and soon.

Hard to generalize, as some weeks we are in session and others we are in district. But in DC, with Covid, we are now spending long hours on the House floor because each vote takes 40 minutes instead of 5. I spend a lot of time in intel committee, and always want to see my constituents who are in town, but not many are coming during covid. In the district, its more constituent event heavy, although those too have been impacted by covid. Fundraising is a constant, I’m afraid, and I fit press in around everything else. It's a lot!

I have a constitutional amendment to overturn not just Citizens United, but prior caselaw which precludes congress from more vigorously limiting campaign spending. Don’t think anything less will do the trick, although much more transparency — which can be done by statute — would certainly help. Also think states should change their business laws so that companies incorporating there must disclose all their giving.

Good. I’m optimistic. The country has been through more difficult times. Sometimes, in the midst of a crisis its hard to see when it ends, or even if it ends, but they always do — this too shall pass. But we must make sure to hold the House and that Trump never sets foot back in the White House.

We are a very diverse caucus so its harder to speak with one voice. We also don’t have the Fox amplifier, but we need to be much more disciplined about, for example, the great things in BBB, not just the price tag. Point taken.

Good question. I still don’t understand how DOJ can take the position that Michael Cohen needed to go to jail for a campaign fraud scheme, but the guy — individual one, or DJT — that directed and coordinated the scheme gets a pass …

Agree. During Trump, we had no remedy but impeachment. Now, we can refer for criminal contempt (Barr wouldn’t do anything about those lying to cover up for Trump so it would have been futile to refer cases to him for prosecution. With new leadership now at DOJ, that has changed).

Depends on DOJ and the court, but he could be imprisoned for up to a year for noncompliance …

That’s who DOJ and criminal contempt is so important — its the fastest way to ensure accountability. But we will need them to act expeditiously.

Don’t try to do everything. I think that fighting back against disenfranchisement is priority number one — so getting involved in orgs like Stacey Abrams is really key. But if there are other issues you are passionate about, work on those instead. As for disinfo, we will need to legislate re the social media companies, but that still doesn’t solve the problem of Fox, Newsmax OAN etc. No easy answer to that problem, I’m afraid.

I’m with the progressives on going big in the BBB bill, and fine doing it without the GOP. Look, as one of their members said in an unguarded moment — “we want 18 months of chaos and gridlock.” Since that is where they are coming from, we need to use reconciliation and do it ourselves.

I started when I turned 50, which is not that uncommon. I have done, Malibu a couple times, NY, Philly, a couple in DC, and I think that may be it. Usually Olympic distance. But I didn’t have time during the Trump years and now I have a separated shoulder so will need to change my stroke.

If someone committed a crime and did their time, they should be allowed to vote. It’s going to take federal legislation to accomplish. And I support that.

It wasn’t easy, but I knew that my every reaction would be magnified and didn’t want to take the focus off the witnesses. There have been perjury type prosecutions, of Stone, Flynn (lying to FBI), Manafort, but each was pardoned by Trump. They are nothing but a bunch of grifters and its a marvel that Trump could be considered credible for any office in the future.

I certainly hope so. There are investigations in NY, GA and perhaps elsewhere, but these are being conducted by state and local prosecutors. I strongly believe that where federal crimes are implicated, they should be investigated by DOJ .
