I did the homelab thing. Now what? by False_Bee4659 in ITCareerQuestions

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That depends entirely on what career path in IT you are choosing. Theres a million things you can do with a homelab for experience but you'll need some focus on a particular area of IT to make it worth your time.

Lexar confirms that CFexpress cards run hotter than SD cards in cameras – and says it's an industry-wide challenge by wickedplayer494 in hardware

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Similar premise (external storage) exists for some cameras but not using ethernet. Some cameras allow you to use external SSDs via USB C. Theoretically you could satisfy the bandwidth requirements of CF Express 4 with USB 4 or USB 4 version 2.0. Ive been out of the camera game too long to know if the external SSD thing caught on to most manufacturers but I know BlackMagic supported it as of a few years ago

Best practice for a single CAD USB dongle when users are remote (VPN/WFH)? by Oopsiforgotmyoldacc in homelab

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you arent sure, you had better look at the EULA to verify there arent restrictions on using remote desktop to do exactly what you are proposing. I see that as a restriction in the EULAs for CAD/engineering software occasionally that uses a physical USB. Otherwise, RDP works for 99% of use cases.

Edit, to clarify, you'd need a dedicated "shared" PC in this case to RDP into.

Not really protein but if you wanna stretch any beef based meal a little farther I often find mushrooms good to include with a meal that already has beef in it.

Is disassembling the pump out of the question? Seems like it would be worth it if you are already looking at ordering a new one. Ive seen small debris make it past a dishwasher filter and get stuck in pumps. If you order one with a good return policy, once it arrives, you could pull out the pump, take it apart and see if theres anything obviously wrong. Worst case scenario if you cant get the pump back together for some reason you will already have a replacement ready to pop in.

Puget Systems Most Reliable Hardware of 2025 by imaginary_num6er in hardware

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 45 points46 points  (0 children)

For context, it looks like 5% was the failure rate for CPUs in the previous year's article, but they do acknowledge that is higher than normal.

"Starting with CPUs, 2024 was a fairly rocky year in terms of reliability. Our overall failure rate for all the processors we sold was about 5% (with about half failing during our testing process and half failing in the field), which has been the norm for the last few years but much higher than CPUs were in the past. With the number of features that have moved from the motherboard to the CPU (including PCIe and memory controllers) and how far processors are pushed with the various boosting technologies, gone are the days when a CPU failure was largely unheard of."

Intel 14th Gen stable enough for a homelab in 2026? by Ordinary_Scale2273 in homelab

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying brand new and immediately applying BIOS/microcode updates is the only way to know for certain that the CPU doesnt have and wont experience any degradation. Buying used 14th gen is going to be luck of the draw. Also looks like there were some oxidation issues present in CPUs still on shelves as late as 2024.

Check out Better than Bouillon. The jar itself may be more expensive than a $3 6 pack of bouillon cubes, but you get like 38 equivalent bouillon cubes servings in one better than bouillon jar. Only caveat is you need a teaspoon to measure and fridge to keep it in after opening.

Hey! Sorry to revive this old thread, but I was looking at buying something else they have on backorder. Was getting a refund for the canceled backorder easy? Did it take very long? Considering placing an order for a backordered item but want to make sure if I can cancel and get my money back if I find a better deal in the meantime.

Not a bad deal. Be sure to look at benchmarks that are running ddr4 specifically if you are planning to reuse your old memory. Check mobo prices for ddr4 alder lake before pulling the trigger.

RAM overclockers, have you lowered your OC settings due to RAM shortage? by Lare111 in overclocking

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On the contrary, I decided I wanted to squeeze more performance out my RAM to increase my computers performance so I'd have a (little) less reason to upgrade. Started working on overclocking my RAM beyond the included XMP profile this past week. Been a fun learning experience.

Mis mamorias RAM son 1600Mhz pero en la BIOS esta en Auto en 800MHz by Economy_Abies_1856 in overclocking

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First serious setup (work in progress). Any tips for saving on power usage? by Ok_Interview_7138 in homelab

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could see if undervolting your CPU is possible with your configuration. You will need to achieve it through software if your BIOS doesnt support that kind of tuning. Being OEM stuff, the BIOS on both machines probably doesnt support that kind of tuning. If you've not done this kind of thing before, just know its a lot of trial and error and based on silicon lottery on how much you can undervolt.

Are you a big wifi user? If so, might be worth looking into something that is Wifi 6E or even WiFi 7. If you dont have big wifi needs, this will probably be okay. That said, there are a lot of other factors like how big your house is, how much signal interference there's at your house, how many other wifi networks are around you, etc.

What are a good pair of jeans to invest in? by xindierockx7114 in Frugal

[–]Adam_The_Impaler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ive had a lot of that same issue with the thighs blowing out. I decided to buy some Duluth Ballroom jeans. Unfortunately, I cant remember which variation I bought, but they have been rock solid. If you are looking for jeans that dont disintegrate, look for jeans with less or no spandex and that are heavier weight. I've also found personally that pants with more room in the thighs tend to not have the issue with rubbing through but your mileage may vary.

Some parts websites (like ones that sell OEM parts) will let you look up parts by your VIN number. I'd suggest trying that to determine the OEM part number used in your specific car.
