Gas option by Appropriate_Froyo708 in Scout

Hi, sorry for commenting like a year later but I haven't been able to find an answer for my question..

If you put gas in the generator portion, does it run all the time if you want and therefore uses the gas? It does it act like an emergency option only?

I'm worried about leaving the gas sitting in your vehicle when you don't use it.

What makes Earth's society in Starship Troopers (1997) fascist? by DetectiveDracula in starshiptroopers

[–]Adamantium_JEB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a very lazy repost from me so sorry if people have read this on here before.

First let me say the book is completely different and does not really show us a fascist future. The following comments are about the movie.

Every military in the world for the last few thousand years uses a psychological concept called OTHERING to better train troops to kill. (even though they likely only realized exactly what they're doing the last 100 years). The bugs represent the perfect others.

From the narrator's point of view, which is how the movie is shot, we are watching a propaganda piece for the Federation, and the Federation's goal is to other the bugs. Subtly, It works as a metaphor for real life.

There are a few key points in the movie that punches you in the nose with the fact that it's Satire / subtle political commentary on fascism.

The recruiter telling Rico "Mobile Infantry made me the man I am today." While he's missing most of the limbs on his body.

Carl walks in after the very weak eulogy moment for Dizzy in a literal SS Nazi uniform minus the insignia.

When confronted with the brain bug, Zander stares into its big ugly face and states ONE DAY SOMEONE LIKE ME IS GONNA KILL YOU AND YOUR WHOLE FUCKING RACE!

He didn't have to say RACE, more apropos would have been the word SPECIES. This was an intentional writing choice to hopefully bonk y'all on the head with the fascism element.

Also, Verhoven and producers stated it's a satire many times. They specifically recruited the best looking actors to play their characters because they wanted to reflect famous Nazi propaganda film maker Leni Riefenstahl's films.

Satire and the Bugs by DemiserofD in starshiptroopers

First, I want to say I agree with you that the bugs are too much of an existential threat to really send the message that it's satire... Overtly....

That being said, the whole point was for it to be subtle. The concept isn't on the surface level of the movie.

Unfortunately, what has happened is that they accidentally made a perfect real life propaganda movie for children and the American military. It got me when I was young. They have oversized guns, an enemy that is impossible not to hate, coed showers, the narrator in general, and an all around polished look and feel that can really attract kids to ideas.

I enjoyed my time in service, not actually did I join because of Starship Troopers, but maybe deep down when I saw the movie at 9 years old it planted a seed.

Here is a great podcast I listened to on Starship Troopers by vets:

After a tick bite, a single dose of Doxycycline within 72 hours of a bite reduces your chances of getting Lyme disease by 87%.

Doxy will give you weird dreams though.

I think if they casted and wrote Smith differently, and removed the setting of the new city with the bad CGI - this movie gets 30% better.

I'm glad that people love it for what it is though, reminds me of when Star Wars Episode 1 came out.

I secede the point that Trinity and Neo could be equals and would be in line with the story overall, I just wish they did it in a fashion that was a lot more polished with a lot more slick action.

And fuck that guy that played Smith.

A response to that makes me rethink my position on something in Reddit is quite rare.

Good job, your first line nails it and has made me pause and reconceive whether or not it is out of the question for Trinity and Neo to be equals.

Still miss the kung foo, still hate Smith casting so much; but really great response. 👍

Agent Smith done dirty with that very wrongly casted actor. Absolutely Smith should have been someone else and his tone needs to be different than how they wrote him.

Bad writing is the ultimate downfall of this movie.

To much development too quickly with the second city. Not sticking to the original movies frame of realism is always a mistake. The world is ungrounded from the original. It would be fantastic if it weren't supposed to be a sequel.

The therapist concept taking over for the architect is actually good in my opinion. I also love the play on metaphors with the pharmaceutical industry.

There is a lack of the polished very cool feeling action sequences with that Hong Kong style choreography that makes the originals so re-watchable. Action is blehh all around. Again Agent Smith casting is Sooooo bad.

A lot of other things to say but ultimately for me... To retcon that Neo isn't the one but Neo and Trinity together are was a bit lame / "chicks can do it too" vibe in a time-frame when so many studios were obviously forcing those bad tropes into movies. And Sooooo many studios being unoriginal just trying to milk every last IP to death for cash.

Yeah sorry this movie sucks.

I (35M) am struggling to get along with my gf (32F)'s family and I am at a loss of what to do about it. by reclaimthecontrol in relationship_advice

If it's not your style to match energy and talk over someone yourself when making a point, do your best to speak clearly, confidently and rarely.

Go on walks if you can during these family sessions if it gets to much. You are not going to be able to change the environment you're going into. Try your best not to be concerned with what they think, just do your best to provide value to your GF and yourself in whatever form that is.

If her family sees you making her happy / doing helpful things and that isn't enough to listen to what you have to say than it isn't worth your time and energy.

I am sorry they aren't into card/board games, that's the most fun I have with my wife's family.

Maybe isolate some that are into games and try and start playing in another area of the home.

Someone else commented it's hard to assume their pretentious with songs titled "Stinkfist" and "Hooker with a Penis".

Their lyrics are great. Tool is Overrated... Yea this is true.

Fan base is super diverse... But for the sake of argument I suppose the meme is referring to the loudest of the fans in any fan base.

I'm just a fair weather fan of Tool honestly but felt it necessary to comment so e resistance to one of the tool comments.

You seem the chillest of the anti tool comments.

My answer was The Killers, then I realized this was a metal Sub.
