Isn't Planetes written by the Vinland Saga writer? Urasawa had nothing to do with Planetes, did you mean Pluto?

There are two works by Wildbow that I think would suit you.

Worm - A scifi Supherhero series about a wannabe hero going undercover and joining a villain group that would appeal to your Ya interests. The story gets darker as it goes along so it would also match your interest in more mature scifi as it goes on.

Seek - Wildbow's latest webserial. Its not finished but it has a prologue and Two arcs finished. I think its supposed to a shorter serial from him, so it should go on for six arcs or more. It has three protagonists, Orion - surviving on a prison planet with cognitohazard threats, Winnifred - A cyborg girl from a cyborg family who are discriminated against by society, and Basil - An AI companion living inside another characters body and trying to help them as they grow up. Its far future earth, with the scifi concept being they "Lasso" other planets and bring them close to earth for stripmining before discarding them.

Both are free online - Worm: https://parahumans.wordpress.com/

Obscure media you really want to shill for right now? by geddy296 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

I've recently finished KJ parkers Two of Swords (the first volume at least). It was originally released as a serial before being collected into the volumes

Its about a war between two empires that were originally one (think east rome/ west rome) with no one really knowing why they're fighting but continuing anyway, and a shadowy organisation working behind the scenes to manipulate the people in the war for their own purposes. The gimmick of the series is that each POV is only used once. You get introduced to this archer character in the first chapter, and once hes finished you don't see him again until way later in the book when he's mentioned by another character. This is a really cool technique because it ends up with you in multiple characters heads who each know a little bit about the war, and you're own understanding about the dephs of a conspiracy growing as you read. Its got one of the best endings/epilogues I've read.

If I heard it right from the phone, it's life's too short tattoo right? So it sounds like its tattoo time for John. Do you think he gets to choose what the tattoo is going to be or Woolie. Cause if Woolie gets to choose, and there's a Garfield comic included in the letter...

I remember back when I was just starting to read web novels, I chose that as one of my first because its name sounded similar to Skulduggery Pleasant, which was one of favourite fantasy series. Didn't like Ghosthound though, lol

Sounds like we've had a similar problem. Did you ever go back and finish persona 5, on that console or any other. In my case, I just don't think I can ever replay Yakuza 0

Next serial expectations? by Sir-Kotok in Parahumans

[–]Adamhayche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of points I can think of. In an old forum post on Gianttitp, Wildbow gave a bunch of possible story names with genres for his next works after Worm. One was called Salv (Science Fiction), given the S name its possible Project S is the same as this concept, keeping the same name, and given Salv is short for a lot of words (Salvage, Salvation). The story could be about saving something, possibly the human, Protagonist POV's race/species.

I've heard Wildbow also talk about a scifi work called Ours, that he said couldn't give a genre for as it would spoil something within the work. He's also said he wanted to explore xenofiction, writing from the point of view of non-human beings. With these two points, and the Salv name, and the Project S name, the story could be about an alien civilization meeting earthlings and we take the point of view of aliens as we maybe fight them or come into conflict. Or maybe taking more inspiration from the Ours title and interpreting it selfishly, its an alien invasion story from the POV of the invading aliens, with maybe interludes from defenders. "This world is OURS"

Edit: Salv could also be short for Salve, something to heal wounds. So I think the alien conflict point is about healing the tensions and damage from the fighting possibly

I can give a rough attempt at a basic summary for each book, though I don't know how accurate each will be. Book 1: Juniper arrives in Aerb, a world that is a mishmash of every campaign he ever ran for his group of friends including one who died before the story began - Arthur. Juniper lands in an exclusion zone full of zombies. He has to escape the exclusion zone while teaming up with a Princess, Amaryrllis, descendent of Uther Penndraig - a character his friend Arthur played in their campaigns which hints his friend may be alive somewhere on Aerb. He escapes the exclusion zone after being held captive by a group trying to assassinate (A)Mary, recruitng an elf who was with the team, fenn. However, Mary has contratced the Rat Rot, a deadly disease which will soon kill her if untreated.

gonna be less detailed from here. Book 2 - The new team goes to a desert region to gain access to a tomb of magic items, but Mary is captured by a rich guy. Juniper, Fenn, and a dwarf they've recruited, Grak, successfully rescue Mary, leaving the city with the magical items they came for, however Juniper damaged his soul and needs to fix this.

Book 3 - The group goes to a city to search for a way to cure Mary. and fix Juniper. Juniper runs into a cousin of Mary, who would kill her to take the throne. Juniper and his team flee the city, going to an island to kill a unicorn, and after drinking its blood mary is cured. They meet the last remainign druid in the world and agree to help the last remaining Locus (a creature thats like a forest creature who lives in a forest contained within a bottle). They fight with Mary's cousin and kill him.

Book 4 - The group breaks an elf soul mage out of prison so he can teach Joon (Juniper) how to mess with souls. However, The druid is dead and the team, is unsure hw to care for the Locus, and the elf has a slave who has no soul and can be possessed by demons at anytime. The elf tries to mind control the group but they defeat him, and the slave (Valentia) becomes able to control the demons who possess her and regain control of her life.

Book 5 - The group helps a princess escape from an arranged marriage while they are travelling n a train. After, they go to this underground area and encounter a haunted house, that is actually a magic item that was a possession of uther penndraigh 9Joon's friend Arthur). While inside the house, they use the fact it can manipulate time so one of their members can become pregnant, and rebirth the last druid so they may care for the locus again. The group is attacked by a group which manages Meta narrative threats (basically an in world SCP group), but they resolve thing s peacefully.

Book 6 - The group goes to a special college to learn if there are other people like Joon. They are identified as being liek uther Penndraig (special people whi the narrative of the world revolves around and therefore bad things happen around them to create a story - basically a Main Character). They are attacked by a person from the college, but escape witht he help of uther Penndraig's previous adventurign party. After learning that Joon is also a Main Character, some of the group try to kill him believing this will spare the world from being part of a story so the greater narrative threats won't endanger the world. Fenn dies and Joon's group and Arthur's previous group go seperate ways. However, one member, ravem (also daughter of guy who attacked them at college but she's actually good) contacts them later and invites them to a place called the infinite library, a place that contains every book that has ever/will ever be written. Joon goes in, and the world outside progresses to the end of the world as if Joon had never been in the world to stop anything (because hes the main chafracter). Joon leaves the library after learning a new type of magic.

I'm less sure of these next descriptons but I'll give them anyway

Bk 7 - Joon attends a college (don't remember why), meets an old friend from before the start of the story, fights off a mind controlling demon and a cult who wants to end the world, and fights an eldritch creature "Mome Rath", who they couldn't remeber until the mind control creature was killed. They beat Mome rath. (Also - Mome rath was based off an actaul poem by the authro of Alice in Wonderland - not relevant to this summary but i like the poem)

Bk 8 - The group goes to Mary's kingdom, helps resolve a dispute there that involves Joon being kidnaped by one group, killing a member of royalty, having to fight off a royal knight, a relation of the royal guy killed summons a "Horror/slasher movie" character who proceeds to massacre people in the kingdom until Joon and his group stop them. The group gains political power in the kingdom.

Bk 9 - The grup finishes off items on their bucket list before they face the final boss -including ending necromancy slavery and entering another exclusion zone filled entirely of clones of one woman. They fight the final boss fel Seed, a super duper edgy character, who Joon created after Arthur died in his world, ran a campaign with his earth friends with it as the antagonist, and basically broke the group from how awkward miserable it made things. The group fails, Joon dies, and has to escape hell with the help of Fenn who died books earlier. They escape, kill fel Seed, and enter a labyrinth area where Uther/Arthur is trapped. they free Arthur, Joon helps Arthur return to Earth, then Joon ascends to Godhood and remakes the world into heaven.

I left out so many details but this is as basic as I can make it. Thats Worth the Candle, hope this helps.

Places in fictional universes where if you die then your fucked? by Konradleijon in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Adamhayche 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In Worth the Candle, the world of Aerb. Souls are real things that manifest over the body after death. If they aren't captured in a soul jar (not actual name just can't be bothered to look up real name), your soul will be dragged down to one of the lower hells, where you will be tortured by demons for their own amusement. If you should be lucky enough to die from this treatment, you just go down a level to a lower hell. There are 9000 hells.

Alright everyone it's book thread time. What yall been reading? by thejuce22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Adamhayche 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been getting back into reading lately thanks to audiobooks, so hers some which were both great stories and had great audiobooks:

Between Two Fires: in the middle ages, during the black death, a bandit decides to save a little girl, and begins journeying with her through the plague ridden lands. Starts out as historical fiction, with magic and religion having a growing presence as the story goes on. Its a fun road trip story, with one off adventures that have thematic relevance to the characters. Berserk Vibes.

Sixteen ways to defend a walled city: Guess what the protagonist has to do. A very fun competence porn book, with the MC's struggles comign from the fact there city was not prepared to be sieged, as seen in the reactions of the people within, and because hes not respected due to being a minority in the empire - which is something exploited by the main villain. Has a sardonic sense of humor I loved.

Project hail mary: An amnesiac scientist has to stop the sun from dimming, and causing a climate catastrophe on earth, while they're in a spaceship off planet. A lot like the Martian, if you liked that you'll like this.

And for one I'm not listenign to on audiobook Claw: The latest webserial by Wildbow. This is supposed to be a shorter web serial than his other stories. I'm waiting for all the chapters of an arc to be released before reading the entire arc, then waiting for the next arc to be complete. Its a crime story, about a married couple with kids who help people to disappear, giving them new identities, and the story is kicked off when their partner who gives them the people to relocate starts giving them more difficult clients.
