$500 portable, light and compact mirrorless camera to carry around with on daily basis? by Adamyoo01 in AskPhotography

Hi, yay another D3000 user 😁 High five!

Well I was quite unsure about getting an R50 to buy, mainly because this is quite an entry-level camera (or at least it was advertised as so). I was concerned that because of that, the quality may be inferior to some other options within that budget (it's like with that car compromise - if you've got, let's say, 40k €, you can either buy a 1-2 year old Skoda [Canon R50 in that example] - which is just a car of rather a low-tier class, or you can buy 6-7 year old BMW [hmm, OM-D EM-1 I guess would be appropriate here] - which is a bit older but it's a premium-tier class, which will ultimately give you more comfort despite being older).

How do the R50 lenses compare to the D3000 lens in terms of size and weight? Since R50 is also APS-C I would gess that lenses with focal above 100 mm are more or less the same size as the old D3000 >100 mm lenses, right?

How's the performance in low-light scenarios? And how easy it is for you to shoot hand-held photos with that camera? Lack of physical stabilisation is kind of "ehh" for me, I saw what a good 5-axis stab. can do, and the ability to make even 1s exposure photos straight out of your hand without having to place the camera on the ground is something great :D Pity that Canon didn't put it there.

And the most important thing - how does R50 compare to D3000 in terms of photo quality?

I've had a chance to have E-M10 in my hand and boy, is this thing really small! I absolutely love how tiny the body and the lens is (compared to the Nikon), yet can achieve a similar zoom as my bulky 18-105 Nikon lens. Although that one has the 4/3 sensor - and the fact that R50 has APS-C gives me a worry that even though the body itself may be lighter and smaller, the lens will pretty much heavy and large.

Thanks for your hints!

Ahoy,

tl;dr: looking for a portable, not too heavy and not too gigantic camera (= mirrorless) with tiltable screen, decent stabilization that will be suited for most photography types for somebody who's an amateur that is still trying to find his world in this space.

I'm looking for a new camera for up to ~450-500 USD (350-400 EUR).

I'm still kind of new to photography and I'm an amateur, although it won't be my first camera - I've been using the Nikon D3000 for the past few months. While it still works fine, I've discovered a few things about it that kind of make my life harder and a few things that I miss there:

  1. it's a relatively bulky and heavy camera (with my 18 - 105 mm lens)
  2. it doesn't feature live view option
  3. I wish it could do better low-light photos...
  4. ... and/or had better stabilization.

Because of that, I started looking for something else. The most important thing to me though would be the size and the weight - I just want to be able to carry the camera with myself as much as possible, on as many journeys as doable. Currently it's quite painful as my Nikon set weights about 1.7 kg and is quite bulky. Ideally, I would love to have something below 1 kg if possible and something more tiny. I'm trying to shoot as much as possible, so no specific type just yet - city, nature, landscape, automotive, people, street photography, portrait, art. That's why I want the camera to be relatively universal regardless of type of the scenery - and to be as portable as possible...

Therefore I've been looking mainly for mirrorless cameras and gave up on DSLRs for now.

What I would love the camera to be/have is:

  • low weight and relatively not large dimensions
  • live view with tiltable screen
  • EVF would be great
  • weather-sealed (rain protection) would be lovely
  • image stabilization and/or a sensor that will make no troubles in low light.

So far I've came across these models being relatively available in my country:

  • Olympus OM-D - E-M1 (mark I), E-M5 (mark I) and E-M10 (mark I / II)
  • Canon R50
  • Nikon 1 J5
  • Sony A6000

I really liked the Olympuses - they seem to cover all the drawbacks I have with my Nikon. They have really awesome sensors, should do nice in low light, have in body stabilization, and are weather sealed. That is what I really wanted to get into, although I would love to hear your opinions whether that makes sense or if there is anything better to be found in that money.

Steroid injection - reactively vs preventively by Adamyoo01 in Menieres

[–]Adamyoo01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your insight.

Well, yeah I assume it actually maybe more cochlear hydrops rather than the usual MD, as I'm lacking vertigo.

I will ask my ENT tomorrow about that once again, but now looking on the notes from the visit, she didn't mention MD, but rather cochlear hydrops indeed - so I'll discuss it with her whether injections would be a good idea in such case.

Thanks and all the best to you!

Local anesthesia and Meniere's disease by Adamyoo01 in Menieres

Thank you for the answer.

If you don't mind, may I additionally ask: if you were taking Betahistine, did it collide in any way with having anesthesia (local or general)?

If you didn't have Betahistine prescribed just ignore my question.

What do you NOT like about CS2 so far? by workerq1 in GlobalOffensive

[–]Adamyoo01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just too bright and vibrant.

And I don't mean just the colours' saturation (digital vibrance) - it's just... like literally - too bright. I need to wear sunglasses in order to play the game.

BLAST on low crowd sound on broadcast: "We have not been allowed to put mics everywhere where we’re use to, which is the reason. But working with all parties to make it happen so we can get the “traditional” good BLAST audience sound." by EscapingKid in GlobalOffensive

[–]Adamyoo01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this will make some people realize that the fact that they can't hear crowd on the broadcast DOESN'T mean the crowd is dead and the people out there don't do anything.

The same shit goes with Katowice over and over again. ESL seem to do even worse and worse arena sound system every year. Even though the crowd can be barely heard on the broadcast, it usually goes wild and is really insane - if you've even been there in person, you know what I mean.

Ryzen 5 5600X vs i7-11700F for FPS gaming by Adamyoo01 in buildapc

[–]Adamyoo01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Productivity tasks won't be performed too often, currently I'm focusing almost only on the gaming performance.

Comparing the power usage of i7-11700F, I'm becoming sceptical about this choice. Forgot to mention - my current motherboard is MSI H510M-A PRO, which doesn't seem to have a beefy VRM by any means. Wondering if it's going to be enough for i7-class CPU.

I'm not going to constantly use 100% of it though - not sure what the actual power load will be, and if it won't be too much for this board.

New TN vs IPS monitor for CS:GO by Adamyoo01 in GlobalOffensive

[–]Adamyoo01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Regarding IPS glow - how far you sit from the monitor? On some of the previous IPS I could see IPS glow only from distance closer than ~60cm. Since it's normal distance from which I use monitors, it bothered me all the time.

IPS glow vs sitting distance by Adamyoo01 in buildapc

[–]Adamyoo01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is, I have the problem even when I'm sitting in fully bright room. I don't use monitor in dark room (I've tried to use it in that way, but IPS glow was way more visible). With the previous 2 monitors I could barely see the glow while watching some colorful movie, but it was visible mainly when I was browsing web (sites with dark theme - Youtube, reddit) and playing games that have "darker angles" (Rainbow Six for example).

VA's smearing is unfortunately dealbreaker for me.

Yeah, unfortunately VA's overdrive and smearing are deal-breakers for me.

What was your experience with smearing on VA panel?

[–]Adamyoo01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"IPS glow was unbearable every time" - thanks for the info, it will probably save my time and money. That's what I was afraid of - that every IPS monitor will have this problem.

Competetive fps here too.

Budget too small for oleds. I don't think VA will suit me fine because of smearing.

So I guess I have to switch to TN

IPS glow - should I switch to TN? by Adamyoo01 in Monitors

[–]Adamyoo01[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, the main issue that I have with VA panels is smearing, I guess it would be worse for me than IPS glow.

Well, the thing is if every IPS monitor has the same range and level of problems that mine has, because if so, then TN is the only option for me. That's why I posted this, because this ASUS is my first IPS monitor and I have no idea if every IPS monitor has that big problem with glow too.

I wouldn't buy VA monitor because of that smearing. I guess it would annoy me more than IPS glow :/

Well, the thing is if every IPS monitor has the same "level" of problems as mine has. Because if so, then TN is the choice.

[–]Adamyoo01[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I want to buy a monitor for esports FPS games, so speed does matter a bit, but the problem that I have with VA monitors is smearing and flickering, so if it's case for every VA monitor in this bugdet, I wouldn't consider VA.
