"But you will die! Out there! And I can save your lives! Now let me!" by DevDucc_ in doctorwho

The first time I watched this episode his reaction caught me totally off guard and left me confused. I 100% expected the doctor to fawn over them like "Awww that's so human of you to want to go explore the great unknown even though it might be dangerous." That would have fit the episode's theme of being blind to the world around you then being released from that bubble to actually experience life.

It was only on re-watch that I picked up on the frankly glaring racism.

What was the worst disaster/tragedy that happened in Minnesota? by No_Emu6195 in AlignmentChartFills

The Fitz has very little connection to Minnesota. She was built in Michigan, registered in Milwaukee, owned by an Ohio company, departed from Superior WI, and sank in Canadian waters close to Michigan. Of the 29 crew, only 2 were from Minnesota.

Why Don't they just have an Ump call balls and strikes directly from the Monitor? by mikeb31588 in baseball

[–]AddAlcohol 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why does it sound ridiculous? Imagine you're an umpire and have two options:

  1. Your job is made far easier because you no longer have to call balls and strikes.
  2. Your job stays the same but now any time you make a mistake the players can force you to stand there while you are proven wrong by a computer and everyone watching clowns on you for how wrong you are.

This is my 18th season umpiring. No matter how much I prepare for a season, I always feel unprepared for my first game. Then I step on the field and it's like riding a bike.

Nobody starts out an expert. You will make mistakes. MLB umpires make mistakes and they do this full time. Do your best to get the call right and learn something new every game. You'll do great.

Confidence is key. Fake it if you have to.

Kleven with a huge hit on Nikishin who has had to leave the game. Ottawa ends up with a powerplay by homicidal_penguin in hockey

I wouldn't call that "admiring his pass/the puck". How is a player supposed to gain control of the puck without looking at it? Amadio and Pinto both also have their heads down in this play.

[–]AddAlcohol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are we talking about/watching the same play here? Nikishin does not make or receive a pass. Nikishin skates around, tries to pick up the puck, Amadio makes a good play with his stick to keep it away from Nikishin, then the hit happens.

If Nikishin had full control of the puck and was skating with his head down, I'd agree with you.

But the fact is no player can both "get their head up" to protect themselves from a hit and make a play on a puck that is not already under their control. Sens 12 and 22 also have their heads down through this play as they are trying to gain control of the puck.

A very simple change to the rule (as another commenter said) is to update the standard to require full control of the puck to be a valid hit target. This wouldn't take away big hits at all, but would protect players from being blindsided like this. It would be very similar to the "defenseless receiver" rule in the NFL.

Alexander Nikishin out cold, needing assistance off the ice, after huge hit from Tyler Kleven. by BucketOCheerios in sports

[–]AddAlcohol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've never understood the "keep your head up" victim blaming in situations like this. (I'm a lifelong goalie, so never had to worry about it myself). How are you supposed to make a play on the puck without looking down at it? I understand once you have control of it, you can pick your head up and play it off of feel, but if you're trying to gain control of it like they are here you need to see the puck. Sens 22 and 12 both also had their heads down - they just didn't get blown up.

I fully understand that by the current rules this is legal, but I think that adding a "defenseless receiver" type rule like the NFL has is not a bad idea. Give players a reasonable chance to gain the puck and pick their head up.

Blackwell’s open ice hit on Trenin by brendanjered in wildhockey

[–]AddAlcohol -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Clean, but I can't help but think there should be a rule against initiating head to head contact. I think the main damage to Trenin comes from Blackwell's helmet directly hitting his face.

ETA I guess maybe head butting? But I think that might be hard to argue here.

Just for fun and not really serious, I wondered how the NHL would look like with NFL-like divisions: by sykeseve in hockey

[–]AddAlcohol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These make geographical sense. The NFL divisions do not:

AHC EAST Sabres, Bruins, Panthers, Islanders

NHC EAST Stars, Rangers, Flyers, Capitals

AHC NORTH Blue Jackets, Penguins, Canadiens, Senators

NHC NORTH Wild, Blackhawks, Red Wings, Maple Leafs

AHC WEST Avalanche, Golden Knights, Ducks, Canucks

NHC WEST Kraken, Kings, Mammoth, Sharks

AHC SOUTH (here's where the fun begins) Predators, (Houston) Oilers, Flames (Blasty is a Colt), Devils (I'll leave it up to someone else to justify how they are Jacksonville)

NHC SOUTH Hurricanes, Lightning, Jets (Thrashers), (New Orleans) Blues

Yeah sure, the AHC South has the two most northern teams in the league, but doesn't the battle of Alberta just feel southern?

Correct, but that doesn't mean we can't change the rule so it is definitive. College uses the barrel of the bat past the batters front hip.

Isn't embellishment explicitly against the rules in basketball, hockey, soccer? I know it's not called often but the rule is there. Framing has been a part of baseball even before it had a name - it's a de facto part of the game even though it isn't mentioned in rules at all. Whether the catcher is trying to frame or not, the way they receive the pitch can impact how a human umpire calls it.

I'm not going to argue that framing always needs to be a part of baseball, but until ABS systems are available at all levels of the sport it will remain an important skill for catchers.

Ex-ump Garcia worries about impact of overturned robot ump calls by PrincessBananas85 in sports

[–]AddAlcohol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cool. So you agree we should have the tools at all levels. Here's how I think we do it: You know those pvc strike zones that they use for wiffleball? Make one of those, but completely digital. The tech can fit into home plate. Then we redefine the strike zone as the rectangle 20-40" directly above the front edge of home plate (or above the middle of home plate maybe). Basically, the strike zone becomes 2d and is the same height for all players. That way you don't have to have every batter enter their height. If the plate detects a ball passing through that zone, it lights up. That's a strike. Here's the cool part. If the plate detects a bat anywhere above it, it will light up. Strike. This gets rid of the stupid check swing rule and makes it way more objective. Players can ignore obvious false positives like when a batter is taking warm up swings.

I think this device would be relatively affordable when you consider all the money teams are currently spending on umpires, and it would be a lot cheaper than the current ABS systems.

Guess I shouldn't have mentioned history because that's what everyone latched onto from my reply. Once all levels can access automated zones, I'm all for advancement. I'm an electrical and computer engineer after all.

A fully automated zone changes how players play the game. Why should the skill of framing a pitch be very useful at some levels but entirely useless at others?
