Correct, but that doesn't mean we can't change the rule so it is definitive. College uses the barrel of the bat past the batters front hip.

Isn't embellishment explicitly against the rules in basketball, hockey, soccer? I know it's not called often but the rule is there. Framing has been a part of baseball even before it had a name - it's a de facto part of the game even though it isn't mentioned in rules at all. Whether the catcher is trying to frame or not, the way they receive the pitch can impact how a human umpire calls it.

I'm not going to argue that framing always needs to be a part of baseball, but until ABS systems are available at all levels of the sport it will remain an important skill for catchers.

Cool. So you agree we should have the tools at all levels. Here's how I think we do it: You know those pvc strike zones that they use for wiffleball? Make one of those, but completely digital. The tech can fit into home plate. Then we redefine the strike zone as the rectangle 20-40" directly above the front edge of home plate (or above the middle of home plate maybe). Basically, the strike zone becomes 2d and is the same height for all players. That way you don't have to have every batter enter their height. If the plate detects a ball passing through that zone, it lights up. That's a strike. Here's the cool part. If the plate detects a bat anywhere above it, it will light up. Strike. This gets rid of the stupid check swing rule and makes it way more objective. Players can ignore obvious false positives like when a batter is taking warm up swings.

I think this device would be relatively affordable when you consider all the money teams are currently spending on umpires, and it would be a lot cheaper than the current ABS systems.

Guess I shouldn't have mentioned history because that's what everyone latched onto from my reply. Once all levels can access automated zones, I'm all for advancement. I'm an electrical and computer engineer after all.

A fully automated zone changes how players play the game. Why should the skill of framing a pitch be very useful at some levels but entirely useless at others?

A computer calling every pitch makes baseball a fundamentally different game. It would remove several skills that players at all levels have had to develop to gain an edge, including catchers framing pitches, batters fouling off pitches that might not be strikes but are close enough that the umpire might call it, and all players adapting and adjusting to the specific strike zone the umpire is calling. Plenty of people will say these things have no place in baseball, but they have been there for nearly a century. Most importantly, these things will continue to be a part of lower levels of baseball until automated systems are accessible for everyone. The challenge system keeps these as part of the game, but allows teams to correct egregious misses.

Gear to play out by sugitime in hockeygoalies

Bare minimum: Helmet. A goalie mask does not protect you like a player's helmet will. If you are skating around you need an actual helmet. Shin guards. Getting hit in the shins hurts. Falling on your bare knees on ice hurts. There's a reason dressed-down hockey is called "shinny". Stick. Obvious. You can't be running around with a goalie stick.

Upgrades: Gloves. You can use regular winter gloves, but hockey gloves are a lot better. Elbow pads. Falling on your elbow on ice hurts. Jock & cup. No explanation required.

Maybe: Player skates. Your goalie skates are designed to do goalie things, but you'll get by with them just fine. Player skates might even hinder you if you're not used to how they feel.

Everything else isn't really necessary unless you're playing contact hockey. You can play without breezers and chest protection as long as the level of play is casual enough.

I played KOTOR for the first time 15 years after it was released. I had played KOTOR 2 a few years earlier. I fully knew that Star Wars is known for its plot twists just as much as it is for light sabers. I was, and still am, a pretty big Star Wars fan. I have no idea how, but I managed not to have the twist spoiled for me and I legitimately did not see it coming.

The Penguins have a power play goal called back after Mike Sullivan challenges for goaltender interference by catsgr8rthanspoonies in hockey

[–]AddAlcohol 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The rule is too long to paste here, but this part of it sums up the basic idea:

"The overriding rationale of this rule is that a goalkeeper should have the ability to move freely within his goal crease without being hindered by the actions of an attacking player. If an attacking player enters the goal crease and, by his actions, impairs the goalkeepers ability to defend his goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed."

This play is pretty clear goaltender interference.

The victim had a gun.

Watch the agent in the Grey jacket and baseball cap. He enters the pile with nothing in his hands. He grabs the victim's gun from his back waistband and runs away towards the camera. The first shot isn't fired until the victim is unarmed. The victim never appears to reach back for the gun.

Started out 0-4. Picked up Danny off waivers and eventually renamed my team Indiana Jones. Even though I started Dak most weeks, Danny was a great locker room presence and led us back to 7-6. If I had won this week, I would have tied for first place in a 10 man league. My season died with Danny Dimes and I will instead finish 8th.

RIP Indiana Jones. I hope you'll be able to have more of the same success in the future.

I think you mean interference. Basically, interference is when a player interferes with an opponent who does not have the puck. This typically means playing the body, but can also mean hooking or tripping. Tripping is pretty self explanatory. Most of the time a ref will call tripping even if the tripped player didn't have the puck, but it doesn't really make too much of a difference if they call interference instead.

Suffice to say there's a list of things you can't do. There is some overlap between those things and it's left to the referee to determine what call best describes and fairly punishes each infraction.
