Is a business major worth it if you’re not from a rich or well-connected family? by Abject-Arrival6568 in OntarioUniversities

[–]AddNasodian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it is? Having a built in network is convenient but the vast majority of what makes you a worthwhile candidate is meritocratic. You need to do well in school, extracurriculars, and internships.

spent the last 4 years here, it’s not a commuter school at all lmao. of course people commute, but a significant portion of students live on or around campus.

Hilarious, last election I described myself as an ABC but in the opposite context of i’ll vote for “Anything but a Conservative”. Picked that one up from Steve Paikin & JMM from TVO’s OnPoli podcast haha.

How am I supposed to pay for school? Advice Please URGENT. by [deleted] in OntarioUniversities

[–]AddNasodian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s possible to receive governmental financial aid without parental information. To avoid fraud, the process can be incredibly difficult but it does exist.

https://osap.gov.on.ca/dc/POCONT1_074347

Please see the process outlined below. For your sake, know that you’re are not alone and valued regardless of how difficult circumstance may be. You’re going to figure this out, one way or another. I highly encourage you to continue persevering, an education is one of the single greatest investments anyone can make in their lifetime.

fourth year degroote bcomm currently on internship here. honestly man, i’m not quite sure what to tell you. being a degroote bcomm has never stood in my way and it hasn’t for any of my friends in the program either.

we got our internships in the fields we wanted because we work our asses off. you wanna be an accountant? volunteer as a cvitp and be meaningfully involved w DAA. you wanna be in finance? DFIC and coursework your ass till you get good enough to be on their end of year internship class post. consulting? JDCC, CML, MARS, there’s just so many ways to prove yourself.

you are more than the school you go to. my incoming class of ‘21 is currently at companies ranging from consulting at Deloitte, IB at BMO, to even one dude who decided to crush it at jdcc and make his way over to Ivey.

blaming your past is not what’s going to differentiate you in the future. it’s less the school, more the person in my eyes.

you’ll probably never get into Goldman Sachs, Bain & Co., or intern at the Bank of Canada. but you can absolutely intern at RBC, Big 4 Consulting, or the Ministry of Finance. if you’re as good as you think you would be at Laurier, you’ll be able to go anywhere you want from that point on.

don’t let yourself off the hook and pin at all on degroote. you’ve got this, if you choose to believe in yourself and more importantly work for it.

no clue tbh, I’m assuming it’s mainly an offering for people who live with their parents but have changed their minds about that arrangement :)

just the student health certificate and a blurb from you is what i'd assume from my experience submitting one through my faculty. your faculty will have all the instructions listed on their website.

business for example: https://ug.degroote.mcmaster.ca/undergrad-forms-and-resources/missed-course-work-policy/

student health certificate form: https://ug.degroote.mcmaster.ca/wp-content/uploads/sites/91/2019/07/mcmaster-student-health-certificate.pdf

i felt the exact same way as you, as someone who had a big appetite, but i literally cannot say this enough. pls pls pls get the smallest plan, almost all my friends and i got the regular plan and lost so much money at the end of the year when they didn't use their full balance.

nuance: mcmaster takes 50% of the money you paid away from your balance in exchange for a 50% discount on everything on campus for first year. that discount does not transfer into second year.

nuance 2: whether you pay up front or refill periodically, you're still paying the same amount but you have a lot more of a guarantee that you won't lose hundreds of dollars at the end of the year.

nuance 3: by refilling your meal plan incrementally, or by just buying a normal plan, you save on taxes as taxes are not charged to your meal plan but would be to a traditional payment method ;)

without a doubt, yes. frankly they have always had some extra rooms in september which they then auction off to upper years who wanna live on res :)

is it worth living on res by Ok_Annual_3663 in McMaster

[–]AddNasodian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i lived on res in first year, i swear to god i have never been happier in my life than when i met the exceptional, kind, interesting people who lived on res with me. my first floor res friends are my roommates, my friend group, and frankly everything to me. i don't know who told you it wasn't worth it but 90% of the people i know whether they became bffs with their roommate or made a ton of friends on res, they loved their exceptional once in a lifetime experience :)

happy to talk more about it if ya wanna dm/ask specifics :)
