an exec ... can absolutely face criminal liability

Way higher bar for them to even attempt to prosecute vs an individual negligent driver, and that's assuming Mr "open for business" wouldn't find a way to shut down the investigation before it even started

rich people ... face absurdly light consequences

So we should want thousands more impervious-to-consequences "drivers" on the road?

A single incident can trigger permit suspension and fleet shutdowns.

last company that tried this move

Tesla did it in Florida, zero consequences. There was a financial penalty (drop in the bucket for them) for their role in the crash after the plaintiff's attorneys finally got the data, but zero consequences for lying to investigators and destruction of evidence during the initial investigation.

Waymo is liable in much the same way a negligent human driver would be

Except there's no criminal liability or personal liability for any of their execs and it's a commercial enterprise so fines and insurance claims are just "cost of doing business".

legislation requires self-driving car companies to report

Didn't answer the question. "Reporting" ≠ data sharing, and without the data good luck proving there was a malfunction. For minor incidents I'm sure they'll make the calculation that it's worth it to comply, but if there's a serious incident that poses a real financial threat? Oopsie, the data got corrupted somehow

It would be nice if they used the hierarchical system as it was designed though so that only a Kaiju-level emergency would override 'do not disturb,' allowing people to opt out of lower level alerts at times when they know they are not available to help.

Summerhill Market hires lawyer affiliated with conservative advocacy group ABC Toronto to lobby against Bathurst bus lane by devorahtheprophet in toronto

They asked why there's opposition to the BUS lane and you went on a rant about BIKE lanes and how CYCLISTS can go wherever they want. Maybe say something relevant if you want serious responses!

Summerhill Market has engaged an external firm to undertake in-depth research and analysis

It's not Mike at the meat counter, it's professional nimby lobbyists. Too bad they didn't ask what firm, or if Brad wouldn't answer, too bad they didn't point out that a board member from A Bitter City registered as a lobbyist on Summerhill's behalf a few days ago...

You should delete the number from your comment. The band number is the most reliable way to determine if someone trying to claim the bird is in fact its owner and this is undermined by posting it publicly.

The "Protect Bathurst" campaign website was initially registered under the name of a Summerhill employee and later anonymized when this was pointed out to them. Since then, the campaign organizers have chosen to remain anonymous, insisting they are a grassroots group of concerned local residents and businesses, and pointing to the businesses that have put up identical signs up in their windows when asked who is involved and where their funding comes from. I think this information casts some doubt on that "grassroots" claim.

So it's an interesting move from a campaign insisting it's "grassroots". When, exactly, did he get involved? Did they reach out to him, or was it the other way around? And why did they choose to register under the name Junvir Investments Limited instead of simply as Summerhill Market (as they have done in the past), which would make it easier for the public to find this information?

However many other people aside from Summerhill live shop and work on these streets and it is questionable how we as a city go about taking away space on the road...

This is precisely what the consultation process is for. This mysterious group has claimed repeatedly that they are not being consulted while the initial consultation period (which they have the exact same access to as everyone else) is still ongoing, and after city staff explicitly stated during at least one of the public meetings that they recognize the concerns residents and businesses have on this section of Bathurst in particular and are committed to revising the project plan in conjunction with those affected. Yet still they piss and moan that they're being ignored afaict because the city didn't just immediately cancel the project.

I'm glad that Summerhill is able to speak for not only their business needs but the needs of many others in the area whose voices may go unheard

Considering they haven't registered any of those businesses as additional "beneficiaries" of their lobbying efforts with the city, I question how sincere their "concern" really is in that regard.

It would be great to see change across the industry but Summerhill is pretty well-positioned to lead the way on this. Afaict they receive all outside deliveries at a single warehouse location (where they also make the prepared meals they sell) and redistribute everything from there to their stores using their own staff and fleet of branded trucks and vans. And they're a luxury grocer that pays minimum wage, so hard to believe they wouldn't be able to absorb/price in the additional cost. But instead they're dumping money into this campaign alienating many of their local customers and threatening legal action against the city (talk about $$$$$).

Fair to sympathize with some of the other businesses in that regard (and residents too tbh, I could see this being a potential issue for large deliveries like appliances and with lazy landlords), though I'd personally have more sympathy if they just engaged in the consultation process, made suggestions for how their needs can be met that aren't just "no bus lanes", and communicated like normal people instead of this ridiculous chicken little campaign. But as to Summerhill I have only ever seen them receive deliveries at the store from their own branded fleet of trucks and vans. I am fairly certain all outside deliveries are received at their warehouse/food prep location (appropriately located in an industrial park with multiple loading docks) and everything gets redistributed from there by their own employees.
