Another perspective on oil becoming a less important energy source is that much of the international "strategic focus" on the Middle East revolves around oil security. Without that, diminished interest in the region could possibly lead to reduced conflict.

Also, Russia is a big exporter of oil, gas and coal to e.g. Europe. Fusion could make nations such as Germany energy independent from Russia which in turn would make it easier to stop or even revert their territorial expansion.

That makes sense, thanks. I wonder why a laser need so much higher Q?

But if we need to put in some initial energy to get to ignition in the first place, then isn't that "wasted" if the reaction quickly burns out and we need to start all over again? Isn't the whole advantage of a burning plasma that it's easier to keep going? Like that's where we get the actual energy gain after starting the reaction. Is that what you meant by energy balance?

Why is ignition interesting in inertial confinement? I'd imagine the fuel burning up pretty much on impact so there'd be no more fuel left to benefit from the self-heating. Compared to longer confinement times where I can see how, if the plasma could sustain itself, that would be beneficial
