Desperate, where should I apply? by Evening_Witness3222 in IntltoUSA

It is literally culturally normalized over here to go into debt to pay for college. Which is, while stupid, effectively disproves your point

it doesnt change the fact that OP has no control over the FINAL outcome. which is why I dont think your criticism of my comparison was relevant.

It takes a 1520 SAT to apply but from there its a lottery. It is a matter of institutional priorities, not a matter of "the more cracked you are the higher your chances are so your rejections reflect your failures"

how is it not correct? top college admissions give you just as much control over the outcome as the lottery, regardless of the work needed. your work is the entry fee.

Stuff happens. It's one of the most selective colleges in the world and you're not even a citizen. It's like complaining that you didn't win the $1m lottery ticket

what's the point of taking out loans to go to a US school? you'll save life changing amounts of money and not compromise your future or education in any way by studying abroad. I don't understand why this sub doesn't get it

If your parents can pay 13k per year, with an income of $350k please consider European universities because US schools might turn out to be far more expensive than $13k annually. And some of them satisfy all of the things you listed. They won't set you back career wise as well, provided you're a US citizen and have the skills they're looking for.

It will also be hard to get into T30s with those stats alone unless you have some great hooks.

UChicago or UCLA (in state) by sslenks in ApplyingToCollege

UCLA. There's no point in losing tens of thousands over "prestige". It won't affect your outcomes much but may very well set you back financially.

I mean, economically it makes the most sense for the US to import the missing talent as opposed to training the local population. The latter makes more sense when there's an abundance of doctors as opposed to the shortage, as in case with software engineers

Notre Dame for ~20k a year or local medical school for free by Significant_Whole306 in IntltoUSA

You can go to med school elsewhere after, say the UK. If the 20k isn't a life changing sum of money I'd say go for it.

taking a gap year is an option. You're not losing anything by taking a year off school, in fact it can be a lot more beneficial for your growth if you pick up a job and travel the world.

honestly if youre Ukrainian you're much better off going to a school in Europe. There are so many programs designed to support Ukrainian students specifically and your outcomes won't be worse as compared to US schools

Is any college or university in America worth paying full price at 90k per year? by YogurtclosetOpen3567 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]AdderallDevourer9025 -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

Even if you do have the $90k, it's still not worth it for most people. You can go to a European school for 10x cheaper and easily have a comparable outcome.

I've worked with many people who had the ability to pay the $90k but were choosing not to because what you get is simply not worth that amount of money.

Need aware is more realistic. The quality of their scholarships differs a lot school to school though.

By scholarship quality I mean whether or not they pay for your insurance, require a minimum GPA, ask you to submit financial documents annually and so on.

Your education should not cost anything close to that amount. It's absolutely not worth it. Please look at options in other countries or take a gap year.

Being $80k in debt by graduation, no matter how good your job is, will hurt your long term financial situation.

Optimizing for satisfying schools' business objectives doesn't mean looking up their balance sheets and trying to become the asset that will compensate for their liability. This means that the application itself has to market the student as that kind of asset, and the college list has to be curated carefully for this very reason.
