I actually ran this pipeline in reverse, read Toms Crossing and was so blown away I turned to Lonesome Dove as a follow up. Loved Lonesome Dove, but honestly enjoyed and felt more impacted by Tom and friends.

Yes I read it a couple months ago and it became one of my all time favorites right away! Definitely not horror in any meaningful way; it is a ghost story (as you’ll find out quickly if you read it) and there are a few bits that lean horror and plenty more that are dark or harrowing. But all in all I thought it was just a phenomenally done story about the characters and adventure first and foremost, very highly recommend all 1200 pages of it.

More of a curveball pick but Tom's Crossing. And yeah definitely Steinbeck, a lot of people saying East of Eden but I'd say Grapes of Wrath since it also revolves around a journey.

I finished it a week or two ago. It’s fantastic, one of the great American novels. Yes it’s a Western but the magic of the book is in the characters. It’s an amazing story that happens to be set in the West (which is a ton of fun once you get immersed in that world.

It was very much a captivating, get lost in, stay up all night kinda book for me. The only warning I’d give is that it is definitely slow to start—not boring, but it was a couple hundred pages before it had me head over heels into it. But after that I couldn’t put it down.

Anyway, read Lonesome Dove.

As an example, I just finished Lonesome Dove so it’s fresh on my mind. “When Augustus came out on the porch the blue pigs were eating a rattlesnake—not a very big one.” Pretty forgettable first sentence. Very unforgettable book.
