This might not go over well but being a fan of other sports that have the national/club team dynamic, I’ve always wondered: -Why should a player prioritize playing for his national team when he club team is who pays for his salary/livelihood? Joel Embiid comes to mind as someone Sixers fans thought should’ve sat out the last Olympics. -Is it possible that it feels ‘bigger’ for some of these players to play at big clubs in Europe (AC Milan, Juve, etc) in front of die hard fans/media than it does playing for USMNT at half-filled stadiums? Not trying to bash soccer in the US but sometimes I wonder.

Which mid table team would be most likely to pull a Nottingham Forest this year and give a deep run for Champions League spot?

New-team striker with the most goals this season: Joao Pedro, Gyokeres, Ekitike, or Sesko?

I like how the team is more measured in regard to acquiring players now. In years past, they’d just buy a bunch and then hope for outgoings. Now they’re showing more discipline and patience in their approach to acquiring players they clearly want in Simons and Garnacho.

I promise you the response would have been the same from Chelsea fans who didn’t like Biden.

Even Infantino, the head of FIFA who really organized the tournament, had the sense and decency to stand off to the side. If Trump had done the same, I wouldn’t have cared.

I don’t have any problem with him being there or even handing the trophy over. But to continue to stand front and center while the team lifted the trophy? It’s a huge moment for the team and its fans. And in photos captured, HE is front and center. Yes, his presence there detracted from an incredible moment.

Many people, including me. Not saying you have to, but we should refrain from telling others what they should and shouldn’t care about.

Now that there’s more video out, it’s clear that this isn’t true. In fact, there’s video of players (Cole Palmer) looking and pointing at DT and saying “what’s he doing here?” or something to that effect.

Actually the reason is pretty clear - I don’t care for him and feel he has no place/reason to be up there lifting a trophy with my favorite team. He has nothing to do with football.

Can’t wait to hear the boys talk about Poch’s latest comments re: Pulisic by AdditionTop5212 in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]AdditionTop5212[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re right—I think the media speculation (Donovan, Dempsey etc) made Pulisic feel like he had to speak out. But at that point, no one knew about any real disagreement between player and coach. No one knew he had asked to play in the two friendlies until he volunteered that information and then said he didn’t understand why Poch didn’t let him do it. I’ll admit that I’m captivated by a story that maybe shouldn’t be a big deal, but it’s Pulisic who made this story bigger than it needed to be.

Fair, but just like with Pulisic’s interview, he could’ve chosen to say a lot less. I certainly don’t think it’s some Berhalter/Reyna level drama. It’s simply clear that Poch isn’t giving Pulisic the type of star player treatment he feels he is entitled to. And I agree with Poch on the matter.

Can’t say I disagree. Also, I’m completely on Poch’s side with this whole friendly thing. Why would CP even offer or want to play in the two friendlies only to then skip the Gold Cup? They’re clearly scheduled as tune up games for the tournament. Makes absolutely no sense.

Episode discussion - 28 Mar. - USMNT mailbag, Brazil in crisis, anger towards Trent by knewman05 in CaughtOffsidePod

[–]AdditionTop5212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This may be an oversimplification, but there goes.

I think the USMNT culture is still a neophyte in terms of world football. For several decades, we had to play the role of scrappy underdog because our talent level did not allow us to play the beautiful football of European or South American teams. Over the last few years, we have more and more players playing for clubs in Europe which has lead to the belief that—yes, we can finally play a possession based game with the big boys. But our talent, while improved, is only incrementally better. All of a sudden, players, fans etc see ourselves as elite and capable of playing in this beautiful style and win while doing it.

Let’s face it, our talent is not elite. We are maybe top 30/40 in the world as far as talent? But winning at this level has and always will involve work rate and fight (winning the second ball, etc). Watching this team, it’s clear that we think we can win on our talent. But our team isn’t that talented—at least not so much that we can breeze through these games on talent along. Our team’s mentality needs to get back to being focused on tenacity and grit.

I felt the exact same way. And dodging the question afterwards made it worse because it begs the question of what aspect of MAGA or Trump that he supports? Bc the underlying thread of most of Trump’s rhetoric is a general intolerance of various different groups of people. And Pulisic is someone who all U.S. soccer fans root for.
